Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and caring Health Care Assistant to join our friendly GP Practice. The HCA will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education and support the Practice Nursing team in the delivery of nursing services. Phlebotomy skills and experience working in general practice are desirable and preferred. A team player with good clinical skills and an interest in further training and personal development are vital. The ability to work autonomously within a busy team environment is essential. Salary is negotiable, depending on experience.

Main duties of the job

To provide treatment room services to patients of the practice, within the training and professional competence of the post holder.

To support Doctors and the Nursing/HCA team in providing an effective level of care to the practice patient population.

To undertake tasks and duties as delegated by the Lead Practice Nurse or other suitably qualified regulated professional.

To ensure actions are professional and consistent with practice policies and protocols.

To conduct audits and patient screening in line with policy and guidance

About Montgomery Medical Practice

Montgomery Medical Practice is a rural, dispensing GP Practice with around 7800 patients situated on the border of Montgomeryshire/Shropshire. Despite its idyllic rural location Montgomery is within a short (30 minute) drive of Shrewsbury and an hour and a half from Birmingham.

We have a multidisciplinary team that includes Physician Associates, Nurse Practitioners, Practice Nurses, Health Care Assistants and a Paramedic. The community nursing team are based in the practice which allows the practice to have a great relationship with the district nursing team.

We are a training practice for GP trainees, medical students, physician associates and pre-registration pharmacists.

The practice team has a shared ethos of delivering a high quality service to our patients with resources available. We are a forward thinking practice and have great links with our Patients Association Group

Job description

Job responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

Undertake new patient health checks.

Support the practice team with health promotion programmes.

Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, and pulse rate, recording findings accurately. Record BMI information.

Facilitate routine cardiac monitoring, advising patients accordingly.

Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required.

Support the practice team with the management of chronic disease clinics.

Act as a chaperone as required.

Venepuncture (training will be provided if required).

Administering of immunisations/injections -within scope (e.g., Flu/B12, training will be provided if required).

Carry out ECGs as requested.

Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation.

Provide support during minor operations/sexual health clinics as required.

Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session.

Ensure fridges are performing correctly in accordance with guidance.

Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC policy.

Deliver opportunistic health promotion and advice where appropriate. E.g., Signpost to stop smoking services.

Complete INR clinics with the Physician Associates.

Ensure Oxygen supplies are within the correct limits.

Secondary responsibilities

Participate in practice audits as directed by the audit lead.

Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care.

Support and participate in shared learning with the organisation.
