Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Clinical Biochemistry/Immunology. The service supports all hospital wards and departments, as well as GPs, clinics, and private hospitals across central and south Buckinghamshire and beyond. The central laboratory is based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, with a satellite laboratory at Wycombe Hospital. Staff are expected to work at either site as required by the service.

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Clinical Biochemistry, you will be responsible for processing laboratory tests on patient samples across one of four sub-sections of the laboratory on a rotational basis. Applicants must hold HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist and possess strong knowledge in Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology. Ideally, you will also have experience in personnel management. The department is well-equipped with modern, standardised analysers, including Architect, Tosoh, Osmo 1 (Advanced Instruments), Chlorochek, HM-JACK, UVikon in Biochemistry, and Helena V8 in Immunology.

You will be expected to work cross-discipline following appropriate training and will be required to participate in the out-of-hours shift rota. Flexibility is essential, as you may be required to work at both Stoke Mandeville Hospital and Wycombe Hospital in line with service needs.

  • To follow and regularly review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensuring compliance with national accreditation standards (UKAS, MHRA, HTA) and internal quality management systems including COSHH, risk assessments, and audits.
  • To perform and validate complex manual and automated laboratory tests, including precision pipetting, reagent preparation, and technical verification to maintain result accuracy and reliability.
  • To calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot complex laboratory equipment and software to ensure smooth and uninterrupted service delivery.
  • To accurately record, validate, and authorise laboratory results in the pathology system while maintaining compliance with data and reporting standards.
  • To interpret and release laboratory results, add relevant technical comments, escalate critical findings, and communicate effectively with clinical teams, ensuring timely and accurate patient care decisions.
  • To engage in method evaluation, research, and development projects, stay updated with current laboratory practices, and contribute to achieving key performance indicators (e.g. TATs)..

Qualifications

Essential

  • BSc in Biomedical Science or an equivalent qualification
  • Registered Biomedical Scientist with the HCPC.
  • Experience in Immunology and Biochemistry
  • Must hold an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry or have equivalent Band 6-level experience in a relevant field.
  • Evidence of Continual Professional Development (CPD).
