Job summary
The post holder will provide a high-quality phlebotomy and cannulation service that offers the best
possible standards of patient care.
Collect blood samples safely with due respect to the dignity of patients, and the needs of other clinical
services, and to ensure blood samples are collected in appropriate containers, labelled correctly, and
prepared and dispatched to relevant laboratory sections in a timely and accurate manner.
Assist in the provision of individualised care, under the supervision of a qualified nurse and others in the
health care professional team.
Main duties of the job
1. Receive all patients in a calm, courteous and reassuring manner and uphold the confidentiality,
dignity and best customer care practice for all patients/clients at all times.
2. Advise and support patients / carers, within the scope of knowledge and role, whilst maintaining
confidentiality. This includes using tact, reassurance and persuasive skills to overcome anxiety
and barriers to understanding such as those who are non-English speaking, and those with
learning disabilities.
3. Identify the correct patient against the blood request, collect and accurately label blood samples
from all patients according to local policies.
4. Ensure full explanation is given to patient prior to performing the task.
5. Provide assistance to all patients experiencing difficulties during and following procedure (e.g.
those patients feeling dizzy, sick or faint).
6. Escalate to the Nurse in Charge /Team Leader if unable to bleed any patients.
