Specialist Diagnostic General Radiographer (Band 6)

Job summary

  • To assess and treat own patient workload and maintain associated records in an unsupervised area of responsibility (General imaging).
  • Actively participate in and be responsible for the organisation of the radiographic team and patient workload in allocated area(s)
  • Undertake general planar radiography and fluoroscopy of Inpatients (IP), outpatients (OP), General Practitioner referrals (GP) and Emergency Department (ED) referrals, including mobile radiography in the wards, intensive care and theatres.
  • Provide radiography to the trauma and resuscitation areas when on UHS site.
  • As an Ionising Radiation (medical exposure) Regulations, IR(me)R practitioner ensure the correct procedure is justified and performed.
  • To undertake a specific allocated role in the management of the X-ray department.
  • Participate in own, Department and Directorate Research & Development (R&D).
  • Undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Main duties of the job

1. Take an active unsupervised role in general planar, trauma radiography and fluoroscopy examinations across all 3 sites (RSH, SGH and PAH).

2. With the support of Superintendent Radiographers, develop departmental protocols and standard operational procedures.

3. Ensure safe patient care and welfare by assessment and monitoring, sometimes in the absence of supporting clinical information.

4. Carry out front line patient care and radiographic examinations essential to diagnosis and treatment.

5. Ensure compliance with protocols to ensure that high departmental standards are met.

6. Be able to provide the referrer / reporting radiologist or radiographer with written comments highlighting abnormalities noted on images.

7. Take an active part in procedures involving preparation of sterile equipment and handling of body fluids.

8. Prepare and administer imaging contrast media under sterile or aseptic conditions where necessary.

9. Manual handling of patients including the handling of spinally compromised patients.

10. Assess the ability of patients to undergo general radiographic examinations and modify technique accordingly.

11. Ensure correct justification of radiographic procedures keeping radiation doses as low as reasonably achievable.

12. Obtain verbal informed consent for patients undergoing examination or treatment.

14. As an IR(ME)R operator, where necessary, communicate with all grades of medical, nursing and AHP staff to ensure the most appropriate examination is performed, modifying technique such that the medical question asked in the referral is answered in the images.

15. Report and act for adverse incidents in the absence of a Superintendent radiographer.

16. Prioritise own and the teams workload to effectively manage service provision.

17. Be responsible for allocated departments. Service and staff when working outside core hours.

18. Supervise and co-ordinate multi-disciplinary teams in allocated area(s).

19. Work in, and monitor, restricted areas of operation to ensure the radiation safety and protection of all working in the environment e.g. ward or theatre environment in accordance with departmental local rules.

20. Work within the Code of Professional Conduct of the College of Radiographers and the Health Professions Council and maintain professional registration.

21. Undertake quality assurance of X-ray machines and other imaging equipment. Report faults to a Superintendent Radiographer to ensure minimal down time and radiation safety.

22. Accurately complete patient and departmental documentation using computer systems, as appropriate.

23. Undertake digital image post-processing, including manipulation and archiving to enable accurate presentation of patient data to enhance diagnosis, treatment, and management.

24. Take professional responsibility and train others in the safe preparation and use of specialised equipment; therefore, ensuring the safe use of radiation and high voltage equipment in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

25. Participate in staff and service development by identifying areas of improvement.

26. Using own initiative, deal with front line conflict or dispute with patients and /or carers, anxious about their condition and its consequences or the equipment and examination required. Additionally deal with patients, carers, visitors, or colleagues who are abusive. Report adverse incidents for advice or intervention by senior staff as appropriate.

27. Undertake and record personal CPD.

28. Participate in and undertake departmental audit and research where appropriate.

29. Undertake practical, theoretical and clinical teaching of new staff entering speciality, radiographers, student radiographers, Foundation Degree assistant practitioners and other staff groups including medical and nursing students.

30. To be responsible for and participate in the induction of new radiographic staff in an allocated area.

31. Perform mentoring / preceptorship of Radiographers, student radiographers, radiography assistant practitioners and radiography departmental assistant.

32. Rotate to other sections of the Care Group/Trust where necessary to ensure continuation of essential services, within the boundaries of expertise, on an exceptional basis e.g., Major Incident, Hospital Incident.

Qualifications

Essential

  • HCPC Registration
  • Considerable post graduate experience of working in a department using IR(ME)R 2017 and IRR 2017 regulations in clinical practice
  • Appropriate BSc Radiography degree
  • Team player who can also work independently.
  • Able to work within protocols
  • Sound knowledge of all areas of Governance including H&S, COSHH, Manual Handling
  • Experience of teaching, mentoring, and supporting colleagues training and development.
  • Proven ability to effectively adapt imaging technique when necessary
