Job summary
The Legal Services Manager will manage the legal services function for the Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust dealing with clinical and non-clinical claims, working closely with NHS Resolution and with instructed solicitors/ barristers; liaising with HM Coroners and their officers in the management of inquests; dealing with the more complex police inquires; providing support and legal advice to staff; assisting in the drafting of documents for legal purposes; responding to other general and legal enquires; and providing regular information to relevant meetings and the executive team.
Main duties of the job
To manage the clinical negligence and personal injury claims portfolios for the
Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust.
To ensure the maintenance of records and databases of all material associated
with a claim including expert reports, pleadings, written statements, medical
records, schedule of special damages, counsels opinion etc.
To develop and maintain proper systems for obtaining statements to help
thoroughly assess and evaluate claims.
Appraising clinical & divisional directors, and other operational and quality leads
of all new claims affecting their area of responsibility.
Attend conferences with Counsel, solicitors, experts, clinicians and other staff on
behalf of the Trust and take action as appropriate.
To ensure external specialist legal advice/ representation is appropriately
sourced when required.
To identify the potential for any adverse publicity and liaise with the Head of
Communications and other senior colleagues, to ensure that media statements
are prepared where necessary.
To analyse data to identify trends and lessons arising from claims and inquests,
and work with operational managers and clinical leads to ensure effective action
is taken so that claims expenditure is minimized.
Draft and review relevant policies and procedures ensuring they are fully
compliant with NHS Resolution risk management standards, changes in the law,
and other best practice guidance.

Claims

- To ensure that all claims against the Trust are properly investigated and reports
prepared for NHS Resolution, in accordance with NHS Resolutions Clinical
Negligence Scheme and Risk Pooling Scheme for Trusts, current legislation and
best practice.
- To ensure the maintenance of records and databases of all material associated
