The post holder will work in the Community Radiology Department and will be mainly based at the Abingdon Hospital Centre assisting the radiographic staff in the smooth running of the department. Cross site working may be required at Bicester and Witney Hospitals.

Main duties of the job

What you can add:

You will work closely with all staff, in particular, radiographers to assist with delivering a high standard of care

Support Radiographers with plain film imaging

Complete daily checks to within the department

Assist with ordering, receiving equipment & placing in the store cupboard

What youll need:

Minimum 6 months experience as a Radiology Assistant (UK) (NHS/Private) within the last 2 years or currently studying Radiology (Student Radiologist) and completed a minimum of 12 weeks clinical placements

Good level of numeracy, literacy, and IT skills

  • NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Careis desirable

Job responsibilities

Job Title: Radiology Assistant

Department: Community Radiology Abingdon Community Hospital

Grade: Band 3

Hours of work:Varied between the hours of 08:00-17:00

Job Summary:

The post holder will work in the Community Radiology Department and will be mainly based at the Abingdon Hospital Centre assisting the radiographic staff in the smooth running of the department. Cross site working may be required at Bicester and Witney Hospitals.

The Community Radiology department offers a 7 day a week walk in service for GP patients, Minor injuries Unit, wards and out patient referrals.

The post holder will work closely with all staff, in particular, radiographers to assist with delivering a high standard of care.

The post holder must meet the requirements of the Health & Safety at Work Act (1974), the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations, the Ionising Radiation Regulations and Data Protection Act (1984) and any subsequent legislation.

Key Result Areas

1. Introduce and welcome patients in the waiting area, confirming their identity according to the Trust Policy.

2. To be comfortable working with a range of different patients.

3. To exercise discretion and maintain patient confidentiality.

4. Maintain the patients dignity and privacy at all times.

5. To demonstrate good communication skills when dealing with patients, relatives and members of the Multidisciplinary Team, utilising sensitivity, empathy and the ability to manage conflict.

6. Act as a patients escort taking them to the changing rooms, preparing them for the examination.

7. To assist with patient moving and handling and equipment moving, using correct methods and equipment as required (as per Manual Handling Policy).

8. To undertake Mandatory Training as required by the Trust, to develop and increase skills, to improve the service to the public.

9. Responsible for the accurate booking in of patients at reception, in addition to amending data where appropriate, using the Radiology Information System (RIS), the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) and the IOV ICE orders viewer

10. To cover staff annual leave/absence which may require cross site working.

11. Assisting Radiographers performing x-ray.

12. Explaining to patients the preparatory requirements regarding undressing/dressing and assisting the patients when this is necessary.

13. Inputting data onto CRIS.

14. Help to maintain high standards of cleanliness of equipment and accessories, in addition to keeping examination rooms and changing areas clean, tidy and supplied with linen

15. Liaising with porters/wards regarding transit of clients to and from the department.

16. Assisting in stock rotation of supplies.

17. Assisting with the preparation of the examination rooms.

18. To be aware of and comply with the relevant Ionising Radiation Protection Regulations and Local Rules (IRR 17 and IR(ME)R 17).

19. To maintain a professional appearance and attitude at all times, working together and supporting other members of the team in a polite and helpful manner.

20. In addition to the key areas listed, staff are required to carry out such other duties as maybe reasonably required.

21. To be aware of and comply with Trust policies, procedures and legal requirements including Health & Safety regulations, COSHH, Manual Handling Regulations, Data Protection Act.

22. Contributing to the departments Quality Assurance and Audit Programme.

23. Participating in all relevant in-house training.

24. Communicate equipment faults.

25. Assist in and supervise training of new Radiology Assistants as required.
