ACCOUNTABLE TO: Therapy Services Manager

SPECIALITY

Neuro rehab experience is essential; outpatient experience would be desirable.

Main duties of the job

  • JOB SUMMARY

To provide a quality physiotherapy service to NUH patients in a wide variety of settings which may include the community.

To develop knowledge and skills in the management of in-patients at NUH

To take additional responsibilities for specific projects and the supervision of Band 5 staff, Physiotherapy Assistants and Students where required.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

CLINICAL:

1. To have responsibility for own case load and be responsible for a defined area of the service or a particular patient type, working without direct supervision. Indirect supervision takes the form of clinical reasoning sessions, peer review. Access to advice and support from a Senior Physiotherapist is available.

2. To undertake a comprehensive assessment of patients including those with diverse or complex presentations / multi pathologies; use advanced clinical reasoning skills and manual assessment techniques to provide an accurate diagnosis of patient condition e.g. critical care patients.

3. Formulate and deliver an individual and group physiotherapy treatment programmed based on a sound knowledge of evidence based practice and treatment options using clinical assessment, reasoning skills and knowledge of treatment skills e.g.: manual physiotherapy techniques/facilitation of normal movement, patient education and the use of adjuncts.

4. To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including the management of patients in your care.

5. To communicate effectively with patients and careers to maximize rehabilitation potential and to ensure understanding of condition. Communication skills of persuasion and motivation are required. Clear explanation is needed to encourage the patients to undertake their treatment programmed.

6. To use communication tools (verbal and non verbal) to gain valid consent with patients where there will often be barriers to effective communication e.g. loss of hearing, altered perception, expressive and receptive dysphasia, pain, fears.

7. Evaluate patient progress, reassess treatment programmes as required.

8. Work within Trust clinical guidelines, CSP guidelines and have a good working knowledge of national and local standards. Monitor own and others quality of practice as appropriate.

9. To be responsible for maintaining contemporaneous, accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with local and national standards of practice.

10. Represent physiotherapy service and/or individual patients at the multi-disciplinary team meetings, to ensure the delivery of service. This will include discussion of patient care, patient progress and involvement in discharge planning on.

11. To be responsible for the safe and competent use of all electrotherapy equipment, gym equipment and patient appliances and ensure that Band 5 staff / assistants attain competency prior to use.

12. When working on the emergency duty rota, undertake the assessment and treatment of acutely ill patients with respiratory problems, who may have a complex presentation.

13. When working on the emergency duty on-call rota, provide advice to medical and nursing staff and other members of the multi-disciplinary team regarding patients respiratory condition.
