AAA Screening Technician (Qualified or Trainee)

The closing date is 27 October 2025

Job summary

The London Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening Programme plays a vital role in detecting abdominal aortic aneurysms in men aged 65 and over, enabling early treatment to save lives. We are seeking enthusiastic and committed individuals to join our team as AAA Screening Technicians, either as a trainee or qualified professional. As part of this community-based programme, you will undertake abdominal ultrasound screening across South London, working to nationally recognised standards and guidelines. You will play a key role in ensuring patients are informed, reassured, and supported throughout the screening process. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with an interest in patient care and health screening to gain specialist skills and contribute to an important public health initiative. You will receive comprehensive training (if appointed as a trainee) and be supported to deliver high-quality, safe, and effective screening services.

Main duties of the job

As an AAA Screening Technician, you will carry out abdominal ultrasound scans to assess images and provide accurate results, ensuring they are communicated appropriately to patients and their GPs. You will obtain informed consent, put patients at ease, and clearly explain the screening process, answering any queries or concerns. You will be responsible for recording and reporting screening data in line with GDPR, maintaining high standards of accuracy to avoid errors. You will use your knowledge of abdominal anatomy to identify and measure the aorta, escalating findings outside the normal range as required. The role also involves transporting portable ultrasound equipment to different community locations, working flexibly across a rota, and ensuring compliance with health and safety and national AAA Screening Programme (NAAASP) guidance. You will liaise effectively with patients, carers, colleagues, and external partners, while upholding patient confidentiality and providing excellent standards of care and communication.
