Job summary

Cancer is one of six national Programmes of Care overseeing the commissioning of specialised and highly specialised services. The role of the Programme of Care (PoC) is to develop and deliver a comprehensive work programme that achieves demonstrable improvements in the quality, equity, value and outcomes of commissioned specialised services. The appointment is offered on a remunerated sessional basis, two Programmed Activity (PA) Equivalent per week until 31 March 2026 (please note this is a sessional role providing support to NHS England, with reimbursement provided for the role on the basis of the appointees existing NHS pay scale / point).

Main duties of the job

The 2015 clinical commissioning policy for PET-CT is now being reviewed and updated. Due to the complexities around the commissioning of PET-CT, NHS England is seeking to develop a new methods process for reviewing and maintaining the PET-CT clinical commissioning policy going forward.

The role holder will support a review of the PET-CT clinical commissioning policy to ensure that NHS England is commissioning the right scans for the right indications. This will involve the development of recommendations following analysis of multiple factors including published evidence, availability of other diagnostic tests, tracer sustainability and supply, potential benefit to patients, capacity and costs.

The role holder will work with the Cancer Programme of Care and national Clinical Policy Team to review the current clinical commissioning policy ensuring alignment with clinical pathways, national guidance, and evolving diagnostic needs. This includes critically reviewing proposals for radiotracer applications, and indications to support evidence-based decision-making and strategic planning.

The role holder will also support the development of a bespoke methodology for evaluating potential policy amendments, new indications and radiotracers to include the establishment of a PET-CT directory which will form the basis of the new Clinical Commissioning Policy.

The role holder will be closely supported by the National Clinical Policy and the Cancer Programme of Care teams.
