Job summary

As a health policy and data analyst, you will support the NHS Confederations data function, working closely with the colleagues across the organisation and a senior analyst. You will support colleagues to access key statistics and analyse data, presenting it succinctly for internal and external audiences a crucial element in ensuring the Confederations policy output is evidence-based and can credibly influence key decision makers, including the government.

The work will range from rapid data analysis to understand key issues, such as the drivers of NHS growing elective backlog, to in-depth exploration of statistics to better illustrate, for instance, the extent of inequality in health outcomes across the country. Your work will form the basis for reports and government consultations, support fact checking of qualitative feedback from the sector, and produce accessible visualisations.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will take an inquisitive and creative approach to interrogating data and use it to represent activity and performance in the NHS, uncover issues and develop solutions to improve healthcare for UK citizens. This includes working closely with senior colleagues such as the Director of the Acute Network and communications leads to represent complex issues in an easy-to-understand manner.

The post holder will have the chance to develop both their analytical and policy skills, working with policy professionals from the NHS Confederation on a daily basis.

Job responsibilities

Specific accountabilities include:

  • Working with policy colleagues and networks to shape and supplement outputs with data, including web articles, reports, webinars, and consultation responses, thus helping to influence decision makers using robust evidence.
  • Being reactive to developments related to NHS data, including:
- Monitoring the NHS progress against key performance indicators, identifying (and forecasting) key trends, and communicating this clearly to members and the organisation.

- Providing rapid data analysis of regular NHS statistics releases and supporting the development of the Confederations media narrative.

- Maintaining a watching brief over health policy news stories to be able to reactively rebut or corroborate assertions in the media around statistics.

  • Working with your manager on the statistical elements of deep dives and research projects, generating thought leadership and publishing data-driven articles to develop a portfolio of content on the Confederations website.
  • Supporting the organisations membership function with surveys of NHS leaders, including the design and development of research as well as analysis of the findings.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Understanding of the top challenges facing the UK healthcare system.
  • Ability to analyse, present and communicate complex data in a simple way to internal and external stakeholders, including using presentations and data visualisations to tell a story.
  • Experience of conducting data-led research, finding creative solutions to problems and using your initiative.
  • Proficiency and experience in Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets or data visualisation software.
  • Experience of project work and evidence of working at pace, balancing work that has varying deadlines from different people and teams.
  • Ability to quickly grasp new concepts, with evidence.

Desirable

  • A knowledge of NHS data sets and where to find them, or examples of previous experience researching and sourcing data across any field.
  • Experience of working with qualitative data alongside quantitative data.
  • Examples of an interest in UK healthcare policy, including a demonstrable interest in politics and how the NHS works.
  • Experience of developing dashboards in Power BI.
