Job summary

As part of the NHS Confederation, the Mental Health Network acts in the best interests of those who need NHS-funded mental health and care services; and those who provide these services.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking a talented and highly-skilled leader who can successfully deliver the NHS Confederations Mental Health Network offer.

As chief executive, you will work in collaboration with the NHS Confederations network leaders for ICS, primary care, acute and community services to develop and deliver policy and a wider Mental Health Network membership offer.

Applicants must have a sophisticated understanding of mental health policy and practice priorities, together with an understanding of the nature of membership organisations. We are looking for applicants with the determination and commitment to delivery to drive the national mental health policy agenda on behalf of our members.

Job responsibilities

The Chief Executive of the Mental Health Network is responsible for successful delivery of the NHS Confederations MHN offer, overseeing delivery of the Networks strategic objectives:

  • Ensure sustainability for the future of the Mental Health Network through the delivery of effective membership engagement and commercial partnership strategies
  • Working in collaboration to influence external agencies and increase understanding of the benefits of mental health to the wider system to ensure mental health is a priority for systems and key decision makers.
  • Support leaders across the sector, to enable them to lead and improve mental health services and deliver the changes needed to improve population mental health focused on prevention and early intervention
  • Focus activities and work on reducing health inequalities for groups that experience some of the highest levels of inequalities, including; people with a learning disability/autism, children and young people, people from diverse communities, people with serious mental illness and people with dual diagnosis (substance use)
  • Support and develop the Mental Health Network team to be an effective, motivated and inclusive team to enable the deliver of the MHN workplan.

  • Extensive involvement in policy development and thinking related to mental health policy and practice.
  • Proven track record of successfully influencing and challenging at the highest level.
  • Senior management experience including leading, developing and motivating successful teams.
  • Record of working collaboratively with partner organisations to build coalitions and achieve shared goals.
  • Excellent knowledge of contemporary mental health policy, service delivery challenges and the wider NHS.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills that cut through complexity and provide insight.
  • Ability to write in an accessible and compelling way.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including being personally credible and influential with senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to drive the development of a portfolio of work closely informed by the priorities and needs ofmental health service providers.
  • Proven ability to build strong personal relationships and effective formal and informal networks.
  • Authentic and effective manager and leader that inspires trust and a commitment to excellence.
  • Ability to effectively manage the teams work programme ensuring it is relevant, timely and of a high quality.
  • Ability to be responsive and agile in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Excellent public speaker

  • Experience of working with press and media (desirable)
  • Understanding of the UK political environment and the operation of government (desirable)
  • Understanding of contemporary communications methods, their delivery, and how these relate to the success of a membership-driven organisation (desirable).
