Job summary
Wigan Central Primary Care Network (PCN) is seeking a Senior Mental Health Practitioner (SMHP) to enhance mental health support across our GP practices. This role is funded through the PCN Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme (ARRS) and will focus on adults and older adults whose needs are not suitable for NHS Talking Therapies.
The successful candidate will be caring, dedicated, reliable, person-centred and enjoy working with a wide range of people. They will have good written and verbal communication skills and strong organisational and time management skills. They will be highly motivated and proactive with a flexible attitude, keen to work and learn as part of our wider multi-disciplinary team. They will be committed to providing people, their families and carers with high quality support.
Main duties of the job
Working within the PCN, the MHP will offer assessment, brief interventions, advice, and holistic coordination across primary care and community services. The postholder will enhance access to mental health care, support integrated care pathways, and work with caseload across our GP practices.
This role will include providing clinical leadership, supporting quality improvement and service development.
Close working with other PCN-based roles to help address the potential range of biopsychosocial needs of patients with mental health problems.

- Evidence of an in-depth therapeutic and clinical knowledge/understanding of the principles of evidence based mental health care. Knowledge of trauma informed care.
- Effective communication with a range of people (service users, their carers, MDT, GPs, practice staff, key stakeholders). Able to communicate complex and sensitive information in an understandable form.
- Demonstrate excellent IT skills in the use of clinical record systems (e.g. EMIS), and programs such as Word, Excel, and Microsoft Teams.
- Demonstrate the ability to work under pressure and manage competing deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Accountability for delivering clinical and professional expertise and direct service provision. Take responsibility for own learning and development.
