Job summary

As Physician Assistant, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team using a wide range of skills to provide care to adult men with chronic and enduring mental health conditions who are residents in a locked psychiatric hospital providing psychiatric rehabilitation services. The team is also responsible alongside the associated local GP to care for the physical health of the residents. Many of the residents have chronic physical health conditions comorbid with their psychiatric conditions.

As the Physician Assistant you will act within your professional boundaries, providing care for residents from initial history taking, clinical assessment, investigations, care-planning, liaising with other healthcare services (principally the associated GP surgery) and ongoing assessment and monitoring of both physical and mental health of the residents under the direct supervision of a consultant psychiatrist.

You will work with the multi-disciplinary team to support the delivery of policy and procedures and meet the needs of residents.

Supervision and mentoring will be provided by the consultant psychiatrist.

Main duties of the job

Provide supervised high-quality clinical care to residents using established clinical guidelines delivered in a timely manner

Carry out consultations with residents and consult with the consultant psychiatrist on diagnosis treatment and referral of residents

Collaborate with nursing staff psychologists occupational therapists social workers and other MDT members to deliver coordinated resident care

Attend and contribute toward ward rounds CPA meetings, and MDT reviews presenting updates on residents physical and mental health progress and care coordination

Support the consultant psychiatrist in collating information for clinical decision-making

Contributes and participates in audits evaluation and clinical standard setting

Accurate and timely summarising of resident records

Complete all required paperwork for legal and administrative purposes in accordance with relevant standards

Produce complete and accurate records of resident consultation in line with best practice confidentiality policies and procedures

About us

Ashness House is a 26-bed inpatient service for males with severe and enduring mental health illness, co-morbid physical health problems and complex needs.

It provides specialist MDT assessment, treatment and support to stabilise a persons symptoms and help them gain or regain the skills and confidence to live successfully in the community. A holistic approach to care and treatment by a multi-disciplinary team will facilitate assessment, monitoring and review of both mental and physical wellbeing.

Once service users have stabilised, the recovery goal is to move on to a pathway of community rehabilitation, supported living and then independent living. Our aim is to reduce the length of stay, improve functional wellbeing and general quality of life.

Fully document all aspects of resident care and complete all required paperwork for legal and administrative purposes

Carry out necessary invasive and non-invasive diagnostic tests or investigations and interpret findings/reports within the scope of a PAs practice Discuss the result and implications of laboratory investigations with the consultant psychiatrist and with residents

Utilise clinical guidelines and promote evidence-based practice

Offer a holistic service to residents and their families developing where appropriate an on-going plan of care/support with an emphasis on prevention and self-care

Contribute to quality targets to consistently achieve high standards of safe evidence-based cost-effective resident care and service delivery

ADMINISTRATION

Contributes and participates in audits evaluation and clinical standard setting

Accurate and timely summarising of resident records

Complete all required paperwork for legal and administrative purposes in accordance with relevant standards

Ensure that all practice policies are fully implemented

Act as a point of contact for communication between the ward pharmacy GP surgery and external agencies on physical and mental health and care management issues

Work in accordance with all governance and internal systems relating to the management of clinical data and systems

Review and action resident clinical discharge letters under supervision

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

Taking responsibility for own development with relevant evidence-based knowledge and competence in all aspects of the role to meet clinical governance guidelines for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and a Personal Development Plan (PDP)

Stay up to date through attendance at any courses and/or study days necessary to ensure that professional development requirements are met demonstrating skills and activities to others who are undertaking similar work

Subject to a performance review including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development

Work closely with other clinical staff and administrative managers in the setting up and/or improving of practice systems for monitoring/measuring performance against Clinical Governance and Quality Indicator targets

Commit to take and pass the necessary Physician Associate re-certification exams (currently every 6 years) to maintain qualifications required to carry out duties of the role and as statutory regulatory bodies require

The Physician Assistant will work under the direct supervision of the consultant psychiatrist who retains overall accountability for resident care

The Physician Assistant will receive clinical supervision and support with regular opportunities for feedback and professional development

GOVERNANCE

Produce complete and accurate records of resident consultation in line with best practice confidentiality policies and procedures
