Job summary

Buckshaw Retirement Village are currently looking for passionate & enthusiastic individuals to join our growing team of Nurses at The Lodge, based within the beautiful Buckshaw Village, Chorley, Lancashire.

We are looking to expand our Nursing offering at The Lodge, HICAs flagship purpose-built service, which delivers high-end dementia care in our 96-bed specialised nursing home and are keen to receive applications from newly qualified or experienced Nurses.

Working within our nursing care homes, our valued nurses are responsible for leading on the clinical care and well-being of residents. They make quick judgements and decisions and use their clinical skills and knowledge to assess residents conditions acting at all times as an autonomous practitioner.

Our nursing team work collaboratively with care and support roles across the service, external third parties and family to meet the holistic needs of residents. Nursing is an all-inclusive role from doing PEG feeds, catheter care, syringe drivers, wound management, observations, through to complex behaviour management and creating positive behaviour support plans.

As well as possessing excellent clinical skills, our nurses need to have great communication skills, and be a team worker, motivator and problem solver. They demonstrate a collaborative approach to reviewing and developing care plans with residents, and a passion for building strong relationships of trust with residents, their families and fellow colleagues.

Main duties of the job

Usually spending your time on one community, you will be familiar with your residents and their individual needs. You will work with a buddy whilst you complete all internal training and grow your confidence to operate with the autonomy you're afforded.

You will be part of an MDT approach to supporting residents, liaising with other health professionals such as GPs and dieticians, assessing plans for care and reviewing medication. Our nurses play a pivotal role in supporting the person and their family.

Upon joining, you will commence a journey though our bespoke Nursing Development Portfolio that delivers a blended programme of training, coaching & competencies, whilst accessing online courses certified by Health Education England. Together with this, you will receive full training on our electronic medication and electronic care planning systems.

Our nursing teams will also enjoy opportunities to undertaking external training accredited through universities to help towards CPD and revalidation. Courses can include advanced clinical skills, wound care, NEWS 2, palliative care and end of life. Joining mentorship training programmes is also an option for those who are interested in coaching new nurses through their learning journey.

Principal Duties Delivery of Care to Residents

  • To lead a team of care staff that provides excellence in clinical practice, and ensures that residents rights to privacy, dignity, choice, autonomy and safety are actively promoted at all times.
  • To understand the value of and promote a stimulating and enriching environment conducive to the wellbeing of residents, for whom the Community is their long-term place of residence i.e. their community.
  • To demonstrate effective communication skills with residents, their families and friends, being aware of opportunities for health education; providing information and advice where appropriate.
  • To facilitate and engage in positive working relationships with GPs and the wider multidisciplinary team, including hospitals and local agencies, acting as the residents advocate where necessary to ensure the best outcomes.
  • To ensure that accountability for and communication of residents care is maintained consistently throughout the 24-hour period of care.
  • To undertake, in partnership with the resident where ever possible, the assessment of their care needs and develop resultant care plans, evaluating programmes of care as necessary and overseeing transfers of care, e.g. to hospital.
  • To actively supervise and monitor care practices, identifying and responding appropriately to the changing needs of residents to ensure that care needs are consistently met.
  • To undertake all appropriate aspects of nursing care required, including advanced clinical skills having gained the appropriate training and supervision.

  • To be fully aware of all agreed emergency procedures and be prepared to take a lead role in any acute or non-clinical emergency, in the absence of more senior staff or until specialist assistance arrives.

Management / Education

  • In the absence of a Community Lead, whilst on duty, to be responsible for the fabric and running of the community,
  • To demonstrate effective time management and leadership skills and work closely with the Head of Nursing and Registered Manager to develop own managerial skills.
  • To ensure procedures are correctly followed and accurate contemporaneous records of care documented and communicated effectively amongst the Care Team at all times.
  • To participate in the induction, mentorship, teaching and supervision of care staff and student nurses to the Community to enhance learning and improve outcomes
  • To liaise with the relevant departments and agencies e.g. kitchen, pharmacy supplier, ensuring that supplies are available and relevant to the needs of the Community and are used efficiently.

Clinical Governance

  • To take responsibility for own professional development and act as an effective role model
  • To be aware of the NMC Code of Conduct.
  • Ensure that NMC Registration is current.
  • To ensure that all medications, including controlled drugs are ordered, stored, administered and disposed of in accordance with the Hica Medicines Policy, NMC and CQC guidance on drug administration
  • To discuss current performance and future development needs with Senior Nurse as part of the appraisal system.
  • To keep up to date with relevant research and developments in practice, attending relevant study days / courses as identified through the appraisal process or as part of mandatory training.
  • To maintain a professional portfolio for revalidation
  • To work with other staff to implement and participate in internal and external audits and other quality systems to maintain and continuously improve standards of care, through a culture of continuous quality improvement.
