Come and join our rehabilitation team at Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre, providing therapy to our Level 1C primary cognitive-behavioural unit and Level 2A complex disability unit. We have a wonderful opportunity for a Psychology Assistant to join our amazing team at Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre in South East London.
You will be part of a vibrant multidisciplinary team made up of, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Psychologists, a Dietitian, Music Therapist, Social Worker, nurses (Registered Mental Nurses and Registered General Nurses) Doctors and Consultants. The clinical team is supported by rehabilitation assistants, administrators, housekeeping, catering staff and a maintenance team.
Main duties of the job
- Assisting the Psychology team in providing evidence-based intervention to a range of complex neurological patients. You will be supported to deliver essential cognition, orientation, mood, and other psychological intervention, contributing greatly to each patients care and therapeutic outcomes.
- Developing expert interpersonal skills to liaise with patients, their loved ones, and to work alongside a dedicated multidisciplinary team.
- Building on your own skills and competencies to be able to independently organise and run fun and evidence-based cognition and relaxation groups to help patients generalise the skills they have developed in 1:1 sessions.
- Contributing to a fun and vibrant team, where workplace experience is fundamental.

At Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre, we are specialists in the treatment of patients over the age of 18 with physical and cognitive impairments and/or neuropsychiatric disorders resulting from a brain injury or other neurological condition.
We support our patients through assessment, rehabilitation, support, and care across two wards and the site is part of the wider Active Care Group Neuro Network (consisting of 25+ sites) nationally and collaborates with local NHS services (such as The Lishman Unit, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust). We focus on the use of clinical expertise, innovation and technology to meet patients expectations of rehabilitation goals.
Our units are Thames Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit (TBIRU) and Heathside Neurodisability Unit (HNDU). TBIRU is a Level 1C primary cognitive-behavioural unit with 19 beds, and HNDU is a Level 2A complex disability unit with 18 beds.

What you'll be doing:
- Undertake protocol-based psychological assessments of clients applying psychological theory, including neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations
- Assist in the formulation and delivery of care plans involving the psychological treatment and / or management of a clients problems, under supervision
- Assist in the coordination and running of therapeutic groups or clinical projects
- Work with other staff to assess patients and review their care in preparation for multi-disciplinary review
- Assist in the development of a psychological based framework of understanding and care to the benefit of all clients of the service, across all settings where care takes place
- Attend and contribute to appropriate multi-disciplinary meetings
- Be responsible for a designated caseload under supervision of the Psychology team
- Keep people safe from any harm and protect their human rights
- Attend relevant training and development to maintain and develop skills and knowledge

Level 1 Regional Specialist Rehabilitation
This regionally renowned service is for people with complex cognitive and /or behavioural problems following a brain injury or because of a neurological condition. They have complex nursing and therapy needs requiring input from a highly specialist Inter-Disciplinary Team, and treatment facilities unlikely to be available locally.
Patients are usually in the very early stages of recovery from their brain injury and are usually admitted from an acute hospital once they are medically stable.
Level 2 Specialist Rehabilitation
This service is suitable for people who require specialist inpatient rehabilitation and have ongoing physical therapy needs.
Our team work closely together to ensure that every team member is working towards the same practical, realistic goals and that all therapies are focused on the areas that will enable patients to achieve those clearly defined and agreed goals.
