Job summary

Come and join our rehabilitation team at Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre, providing therapy to our Level 1C primary cognitive-behavioural unit and Level 2A complex disability unit. We are the UK's largest provider of complex care, proudly employing over 4000 people. We have a wonderful opportunity for a Senior Occupational Therapist (Band 6 equivalent) to join our amazing team at Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre in South East London. You will be part of a vibrant multidisciplinary team made up of, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Psychologists, a Dietitian, Music Therapist, Social Worker, nurses (Registered Mental Nurses and Registered General Nurses) Doctors and Consultants. The clinical team is supported by rehabilitation assistants, administrators, housekeeping, catering staff and a maintenance team.

Main duties of the job

You will work as part of our friendly and dynamic team to provide robust, evidence-based assessment and intervention for our wonderful patients. You will bring experience, dynamism, flexibility, and a desire to develop, to our team of 4 occupational therapists and 2 assistants, providing intervention for up to 37 patients across both of our units. You will be an organised, hard-working, team player with a thirst to grow and develop yourself and the service. You will be an effective communicator, maintaining a professional approach while working and negotiating with others ideas and approaches. You will seek to develop yourself by understanding your limitations, showing humility and a keenness for reflective learning, by using clinical supervision as an opportunity to learn from feedback and to collaborate with your supervisor to reach evidence-based and progressive conclusions to better your clinical approach. You will use these skills to develop your portfolio as a supervisor, guiding students and assistants as you become more confident and experienced.

About us

At Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre, we are specialists in the treatment of patients over the age of 18 with physical and cognitive impairments and/or neuropsychiatric disorders resulting from a brain injury or other neurological condition. We support our patients through assessment, rehabilitation, support, and care across two wards and the site is part of the wider Active Care Group Neuro Network (consisting of 25+ sites) nationally and collaborates with local NHS services (such as The Lishman Unit, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust). We focus on the use of clinical expertise, innovation and technology to meet patients expectations of rehabilitation goals. Our units are Thames Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit (TBIRU) and Heathside Neurodisability Unit (HNDU). TBIRU is a Level 1C primary cognitive-behavioural unit with 19 beds, and HNDU is a Level 2A complex disability unit with 18 beds. Providing excellent Occupational Therapy intervention, underpinned by sound clinical expertise and an evidence-based approach

Supervising and supporting students and assistants

Taking an active role in peer supervision

Developing your skills as a reflective practitioner

Frequently participating in dynamic multidisciplinary meetings to ensure our patients care and intervention is effective and progressive

Level 1 Regional Specialist Rehabilitation

This regionally renowned service is for people with complex cognitive and /or behavioural problems following a brain injury or because of a neurological condition. They have complex nursing and therapy needs requiring input from a highly specialist Inter-Disciplinary Team, and treatment facilities unlikely to be available locally.

Patients are usually in the very early stages of recovery from their brain injury and are usually admitted from an acute hospital once they are medically stable.

Level 2 Specialist Rehabilitation

This service is suitable for people who require specialist inpatient rehabilitation and have ongoing physical therapy needs.

Our team work closely together to ensure that every team member is working towards the same practical, realistic goals and that all therapies are focused on the areas that will enable patients to achieve those clearly defined and agreed goals.
