Job summary

We are seeking an exceptional Medical Director to provide visible, values-driven clinical leadership at Baldock Manor Hospital. As a Consultant Psychiatrist and Responsible Clinician, you will lead the delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality patient care, while championing a culture of compassion, professionalism, and continuous improvement. Working as part of the senior leadership team, you will play a key role in shaping clinical strategy, strengthening governance, and ensuring full compliance with CQC standards and the Mental Health Act.

Main duties of the job

This is a unique opportunity to combine hands-on clinical practice with strategic influence. You will lead and support multidisciplinary teams, drive quality and patient safety initiatives, and oversee the development and performance of the medical workforce. You will also contribute to service development, innovation, and the long-term sustainability of the hospital, while building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

We are looking for a senior clinician on the GMC Specialist Register in Psychiatry, with Approved Clinician status and significant leadership experience in inpatient settings. JOB PURPOSE

The Medical Director will provide visible, values-driven clinical leadership across the hospital, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality patient care. As a Consultant Psychiatrist and senior Responsible Clinician, the post-holder will lead on clinical governance, patient safety, and continuous quality improvement, ensuring full compliance with CQC standards, the Mental Health Act, and all relevant regulatory frameworks.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Leadership and Patient Care

  • Provide senior clinical leadership as a Consultant Psychiatrist and Responsible Clinician, holding overall responsibility for a defined caseload of patients.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, evidence-based, person-centred care for individuals with complex mental health needs.
  • Provide expert psychiatric advice to clinical teams across the service to support safe and effective care delivery.
  • Ensure patient care is delivered in line with best practice, NICE guidance, and relevant clinical standards.

Clinical Governance, Quality and Safety

  • Lead on clinical governance, ensuring robust systems are in place to monitor and improve patient safety, clinical outcomes, and quality of care.
  • Work with the Clinical Director, Hospital Director and Head of Therapies to develop and embed effective governance frameworks, including audit, quality improvement (QI), and risk management processes.
  • Take a lead role in Clinical Governance and Clinical Improvement forums, driving continuous improvement.
  • Lead and participate in audit, service evaluation, and research activities to support ongoing service development and innovation.
