Job summary

We are seeking an HCPC registered Biomedical/Clinical Scientist (AfC Band 6) or a Healthcare Scientist (HEO).

Salary bands:

  • AfC Band 6: £38,682 - £46,580 per annum, pro rata
  • HEO (National): £31,997 - £39,076 per annum, pro rata

Candidates holding HCPC registration will be appointed on NHS Terms & Conditions at NHS AfC Band 6. Candidates without HCPC registration will be appointed on Civil Service Terms and Conditions at HEO grade.

UKHSA public health laboratories are specialist clinical departments which require specialist and often dedicated medical microbiology support. The laboratories provide expert advice and support, particularly for the investigation of outbreaks and incidents and serious epidemics, such as SARS-CoV-2. These services can be delivered in partnership with colleagues in the NHS, for example UKHSA laboratories can be situated with NHS Trusts and services can also be delivered in partnership with colleagues in academia.

The Manchester sequencing laboratory provides Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) services for a range of pathogens using a range of sequencing methodologies. The laboratory provides an end to end service covering nucleic acid extraction, PCR based enrichment of viral targets and Illumina and ONT based NGS library preparation and sequencing of both viral and bacterial targets. The laboratory has a strong service delivery focus and commitment to continuously improving methods for rapid and high throughput genomics to enhance its function

Main duties of the job

The postholder will work in the Manchester sequencing service. As part of the team they will perform a range of tasks to undertake the execution of Next Generation sequencing services. Flexible working is required for this role. The post holder will be expected to maintain at all times the required high standards and quality to maintain an up-to-date knowledge of genomic sequencing technologies and current working practices within the laboratory.

The post holder will have line management responsibility for Healthcare Scientist Support Worker staff within the laboratory.

  • To promote a strong safety culture
  • To agree safety objectives and to review performance at appraisal and support Senior Management Team in carrying out duties with respect to
    • Ensuring health, safety and welfare of self, staff and visitors.
    • Ensuring relevant UKHSA health and safety policies and laboratory safety committee recommendations and actions are implemented.
    • Ensuing implementation of remedial actions resulting from safety inspections and audits.
