Job summary

The successful candidate will join the Gram Negative team within the Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare-Associated Infections (AMR & HCAI) Division at UKHSA.

Our sub-team conducts national surveillance of infections in critical care units across England: settings where patients are especially vulnerable to healthcare-associated and antimicrobial-resistant infections. We produce quarterly and annual surveillance reports and contribute to peer-reviewed publications. We are a core partner in the Infection in Critical Care Quality Improvement Programme (ICCQIP), working with professional societies in the fields of intensive care and microbiology and other national organisations.

The wider Gram Negative team also oversees the Data Capture System (our bespoke surveillance platform) and delivers the national mandatory surveillance of bacteraemia and Clostridioides difficile infections. We also interact with other teams within the AMR & HCAI division, particularly on cross-cutting issues related to antimicrobial resistance.

Main duties of the job

The post is within the surveillance section of the Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare-Associated Infections (AMR & HCAI) Division. The primary function of this post is to coordinate and develop the collation and epidemiological analysis of AMR & HCAI surveillance datasets. Under the supervision of senior scientific staff, the post holder will regularly extract, collate and validate surveillance datasets and carry out epidemiological analyses to monitor trends, geographic distribution and risk factors. They will contribute to the delivery of surveillance and policy reports and to peer-reviewed publications.

The post-holder will adopt a variety of public health and surveillance portfolios, develop and implement standardised data collection and analysis protocols, will identify data quality issues and will facilitate their resolution. They will ensure that data are collected and processed in accordance with relevant policies and standard operating procedures.

  • Experience in interpreting and evaluating epidemiological data
