Main duties of the job

We are looking for enthusiastic, self-motivated individuals to play a vital role in the laboratory by supporting the Biomedical Scientists in a wide range of laboratory duties including maintaining vital stocks of Consumables and reagents.

The laboratory in Birmingham is a UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) microbiology laboratory and is in partnership with University Hospitals Birmingham Trust (UHB). The microbiology partnership provides comprehensive microbiology services and specialist services to Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield, Solihull Hospital and general practitioners throughout the area.

The post-holder will be responsible for:

  • The ordering, receipt and issue of consumables and for the safe custody of the laboratory stores.
  • Assisting in maintaining Laboratory Services
  • Ensuring accuracy and attention to detail

Job description

Job responsibilities

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • To support the initiation of incidents for replacement stores items as required
  • To receive and document all incoming supplies as required (duties which involve moderate lifting)
  • To support the maintenance of the laboratory stock control system
  • To distribute supplies throughout the laboratory (duties which involve moderate lifting)
  • Clerical duties, including use of computers, and data entry, telephone enquiries
  • Dealing with visitors and deliveries
  • Monitor and maintain appropriate stock levels, receipt of deliveries and preparation of orders
  • Porter duties, exchange of gas cylinders (duties which involve moderate lifting)
  • Work in a safe manner in accordance with laboratory Health and Safety policies and procedures
  • To participate in Quality Assurance and Quality Control activities, and assist the department in maintaining UKAS.
  • Monitoring and routine maintenance of equipment
  • Occasionally work under remote supervision following defined SOP/protocols, and would be expected to refer non routine issues to their supervisor
