Job summary

UKHSA's North West Region has three health protection teams covering Cheshire and Merseyside, Cumbria and Lancashire and Greater Manchester. We are seeking to appoint a Data Surveillance Scientist (DSS) on a fixed term basis to backfill the substantive post holder's loan.

The Data Surveillance Scientist for Health Protection (DSS) works as part of a dynamic analytical community and supports the regional health protection team (HPT) by providing the health protection intelligence function to enable delivery of an effective health protection service. This includes developing and maintaining effective health surveillance databases, developing and delivery of routine and bespoke reports and supporting the use of Case and Incident Management systems e.g. HPZone. (a national UKHSA web-based incident management system).

Main duties of the job

Working collaboratively and strategically with both internal and external partners and stakeholders, the main duties and responsibilities of the DSS include:

  • Surveillance and data analysis
  • Outbreak support and epidemiological investigations
  • Application of advanced software and statistical skills
  • Audit, quality, governance, and research

The successful candidate will be contractually based at one of our North West sites in Liverpool, Manchester or Preston. The role will includehybrid working which allows for staff who can operate remotely at home and in the office, to fulfil their role and responsibilitiesin line with the team and UKHSAs policies and guidance. On non-office days, the individual may work from home. Travel across the region will be required.

  • Masters qualification in relevant discipline or equivalent experience

Knowledge and experience

  • Knowledge or experience of basic statistical tests, performing descriptive epidemiology with strong analytical skills, excellent accuracy and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of principles and practice of surveillance, including data(base) management, data transmission, data security, data quality, data analysis including descriptive statistics and graphics and data reporting

  • Understand information governance including data protection and confidentiality requirements
