Head of Salmonella Reference Service

Salary & Grade: Afc Band 8b £58,972 - £68,525

Location: UKHSA Colindale, London, NW9 5HT

Type and term of contract: FTC Contract 24 Months

Part time hours, 15hrs per week

This post will be a senior member of the GBRU (The Gastrointestinal Bacteria Reference Unit). You will support the head of Salmonella reference service with the operations of the service, including supporting line-management responsibility for a range of staff including, clinical scientists, biomedical scientists, database managers and bioinformaticians, and the supervision of PhD students.

The principal responsibility of this post holder will be to support the head of Salmonella reference service to provide leadership and expertise to deliver, and further develop, high quality reference services across GBRU within their specialist area. You will also be required to assist the delivery and operational management of the Salmonella reference service and contribute towards modernising services in accordance with UKHSA and laboratory policies and procedures.

The post holder will also be expected to assist in any UKHSA co-ordinated response or activity of a national/international nature including outbreak investigations.

Main duties of the job

  • Assist in the management of staff within the Salmonella reference service.
  • Lead, manage and develop a team of staff working within the specialist area including design of an appropriate program of staff training to ensure GBRU meets its objectives.
  • To take a full part in the career and professional development of staff within the team. Conduct staff appraisals and manage performance issues as required.
  • Assist providing operational management including HR, recruitment, career development and accountability for service delivery on a day to day basis.
  • Lead, manage and develop a team of staff working within the specialist area including design of an appropriate program of staff training to ensure GBRU meets its objectives.
  • Assist in planning strategy as applied to finance, business, IT, Quality and Health and Safety, staffing, organisational structure, policies and service development; also ensuring the delivery and positive outcomes of said plans.
  • To ensure robust arrangements for Clinical Governance for activities relating to the specialist area.
  • Ensure maintenance of accreditation status in collaboration with the Quality Manager and other staff.
