This is an exciting role for a Scientist (Epidemiology) to work within the Health Equity and Inclusion Health division in UKHSA.
As a Scientist, you will provide critical scientific and data-management advice to individual system managers to ensure the highest standards in Health Equity and Inclusion Health surveillance and related research.
Location:
UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) offers hybrid working - this means that whilst the role will be based in one of our offices, there will be opportunities for an element of working from home. UKHSA have office locations across the UK.
This role is available at our UKHSA offices/locations in: Leeds, Manchester, Totnes, London, Horsham, Cardiff, Bristol, Nottingham, Harlow, Liverpool, Fareham, Gloucester, Newcastle, and Birmingham.

Main duties of the job
The postholder will work closely with the principal scientists in the department and will provide scientific support for the surveillance and evaluation of specific control activities in the populations served by the division. Support tasks will help the principal scientists to identify and develop the means to answer key questions in the evaluation of public health programmes and to provide clear evidence-based advice. They will be expected to support on major epidemiological research programmes and to collaborate with external stakeholders where necessary.

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities, and duties:
Surveillance and Epidemiology
- Be responsible for collecting and processing and validating the data. This includes liaising with data providers to help overcome any problems in reporting, referring to other scientific as necessary; following-up incomplete, inaccurate or missing surveillance data; ensuring data security is compliant with the required standard; assisting scientific colleagues in processes to reconcile the information collected; ensure completeness of data.
- Liaise with and seek feedback from stakeholders to ensure reporting reflects current service needs to underpin health security in inclusion health groups.
- Update existing databases where required; plan and establish new electronic surveillance schemes where need arises; write or update and develop reports.
- Ensure that all processes relating to database management are appropriately documented and up to date, writing new procedures and informing colleagues as need arises.
- Undertake regular reporting of the data and ad hoc specialist and complex analyses of quantitative and/or qualitative datasets which will require selection of the best option from a range of possible solutions.
- Analyse and evaluate quantitative and qualitative data and research evidence from a range of sources to inform decision making.
- Receive, interpret, provide, and advise on complex epidemiological and statistical information to internal and external stakeholders.
Specialist Advice and Evaluation
- Communicate effectively and diplomatically data, research and other specialist information with colleagues from own or other disciplines making judgements about the suitability of these data and providing an alternative where appropriate (e.g. in response to parliamentary questions) and present findings at local, national and international meetings and conferences.
- Write and/or contribute to the department technical review, as well as peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals, on the epidemiology of and infections in inclusion health groups.
Research and Development
- Undertake literature reviews, evaluative research surveys, audits and other research as required.
