Senior Healthcare Scientist - Molecular Development

The Respiratory Virus Unit (RVU) is part of the UKHSA Reference Services Colindale, London. It is the WHO National Influenza Centre (NIC) for the UK and the National Reference Laboratory for various respiratory viruses. It also collaborates with WHO as a global reference laboratory for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS CoV).

The post holder will work under the Unit Head / Scientific Leads and Technical Manager to develop and apply quantitative methods for characterising respiratory viruses, especially influenza and RSV, for vaccine and antiviral surveillance. This will involve using virus neutralisation, reverse genetics, viral protein expression, and quantitative PCR techniques. As well as this, you will Provide professional leadership for the staff under his/her supervision, leading by example and encouraging a positive attitude.

Location: London, Colindale

Working Pattern - Full Time, on site, 37.5 hours per week.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities

To take delegated responsibility from the Unit Head and Technical Manager through the unit scientific lead in accordance with UKHSA and RSDC policies for the following:

Technical/ Scientific/ Reference services/ Research and Development

  • Development of methodology for antigenic analysis of respiratory viruses, with a focus on influenza and RSV viral isolates using a range of serological materials including human and animal antisera.
  • Development of quantitative and high throughput processes using virus neutralisation with a variety of read outs, applied to virologic surveillance of clinical isolates of influenza and RSV.
  • Developing databases and liaising with national and international collaborators to advance antigenic cartography based on neutralisation.
  • Support the implementation of newly developed methodologies into service delivery.
  • Liaise with other teams within and outside of the unit, as required.
  • To participate in and support the R&D activities within the laboratory and PHE.
  • Any other duties considered necessary by the project supervisor or Director of VRD within the framework of the job summary

  • PhD in Molecular Biology / Molecular Virology / Biochemistry or with approval from line manager to attain qualification.
  • Play a leading role in the assessment of new technologies and diagnostic tests to enhance the laboratories capabilities and ensure that the high scientific standards are followed.
  • Work with Assay Performance & Compliance Unit (APCU) in the development and approval of new laboratory assays to comply with regulatory and MHRA guidelines, and existing or new guidelines from UKAS. Maintain awareness of relevant IVD standards (e.g. standard operating procedures, UK Standards for Microbiology Investigations).
  • Experience of techniques including influenza reverse genetics, ELISA, Western Blotting, PCR, cloning, site directed mutagenesis, sequencing and virus characterisation, cell culture, influenza and RSV virus isolation, phenotypic analysis of influenza and RSV and other respiratory viruses including HA, HI and quantitative analysis of virus neutralisation.
  • Good communicator and team worker with leadership skills and able to deal with problems in a calm and efficient manner with negotiating skills. Able to organise own workload, delegate and prioritise the sections workload to meet deadlines and manage time effectively. Aptitude for managing staff, assessing performance and experience training others.
  • Knows and understands quality assurance principles, being able to deliver fully validated assay protocols that meet national requirements for accredited services

  • Experience of mammalian cell or baculovirus expression of proteins.
  • Familiar with sequence analysis software packages
