Job summary

The Biosurveillance team within VPPC research group, conducts vector-borne, zoonotic disease surveillance and related research programmes, working as part of a multidisciplinary team and with internal and external collaborators.

We are seeking an enthusiastic scientist to join our vector and sentinel surveillance public health Biosurveillance team.

Location

This is a Lab based role at our Porton Down, Salisbury, Wiltshire SP4 0JG lab.

*Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas. Relocation expenses are not available.*

Main duties of the job

The ideal candidate will contribute to a team working on vector-borne and zoonotic disease surveillance and will have an interest in field work. Knowledge of or experience in wildlife sampling (e.g. small mammal trapping or bird ringing) would be of benefit.

They will also be involved in processing and analysing a variety of sample types collected. They will assist the senior vector surveillance scientist in delivering the vector-borne disease surveillance programmes involving: (i) targeted collections of samples from animal sentinels and vectors (ii) the development & maintenance of samples into V&P's biobanks and (iii) viral screening and reporting programmes using a variety of assays. This will contribute to the development and delivery of the wider team's business plan and work programme.

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills and the ability to work with a variety of stakeholders including volunteer/citizen science groups. They will also be familiar with relevant legislation and regulations to ensure ethical, secure data storage and GDPR requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver project goals as indicated by SEO & SPTL
  • Utilise a range of sample collection, processing, and analysis methods in support of all activities associated with the project, ensuring that project targets are met, as directed by senior scientist.
  • Produce data for review by Senior Scientists for input into reports.
  • Provide reports through analysis of data using software and databases as necessary, for preparation of presentations and publications.
  • Lead in laboratory supervision, ensuring appropriate equipment is available and calibrated.
  • Take responsibility for the provision of reagents and consumables required for project area
  • Provide project support as indicated by senior scientist and senior project team leader.
  • To perform any other duties required by the Line manager commensurate with grade.
  • To ensure that the project team undertakes work in accordance with applicable UKHSA Safety and Quality systems.
  • To maintain health and safety competence.
