The New Variant Assessment Programme (NVAP) is a global genomic surveillance program led by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), which is responsible for protecting every member of every community from the impact of infectious diseases, chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear incidents, and other health threats.The NVAP supports countries in several ways, including genome sequencing, bioinformatic assessment, characterisation of variants, risk assessment and immunological testing of detected variants of concern.

This role will be fully home based but occasional travel to any UKHSA offices and international travel may be required.

Working Pattern - Full Time, Flexible working. Remote working for 37.5 hrs per week

Main duties of the job

The post is a part of the NVAP team that works to support global partners to strengthen their genomic sequencing and surveillance capacity and capability, either by building on existing infrastructure or by conducting sequencing and analysis of samples in the UK if required.The post holder will need to have technical expertise in epidemiology and be able to work with international partners and collaborators to scope existing genomic surveillance systems and co-develop work plans to address gaps in pathogen genomic surveillance.The post holder will also need to be willing to travel abroad, convene regular technical calls, and work closely with the NVAP and wider UKHSA team members.

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

  • Provide scientific support to the NVAP technical lead and NVAP Programme Lead in the day-to-day operational management of the genomic surveillance and epidemiology-based programmes of work.
  • Provide expert epidemiology guidance on sampling strategies and analysis plans to NVAP collaborating laboratories performing pathogen genomics
  • Lead on multiple epidemiology study and analysis plans for specific pathogens in public health laboratory settings
  • Support the development of surveillance system specifications x
  • Analyse and interpret genomic surveillance data for public health action
  • Manage delivery of agreed work programme: including timely reporting to stakeholders
  • Evaluate existing genomic surveillance systems in partner countries and support them to act on results more widely
  • Evaluate acute response to incidents and outbreaks, and use to improve standards and consistency across the team
  • Provide technical input across wider activities of the NVAP team e.g., genomics, bioinformatics and other complimentary programmes of work
  • Identify publication and funding opportunities to support and showcase genomic epidemiology activities of bilateral partner in collaboration with internal UKHSA experts
