Responsibilities section:
The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:
- Provide scientific support to the NVAP technical lead and NVAP Programme Lead in the day-to-day operational management of the genomic surveillance and epidemiology-based programmes of work.
- Provide expert epidemiology guidance on sampling strategies and analysis plans to NVAP collaborating laboratories performing pathogen genomics
- Lead on multiple epidemiology study and analysis plans for specific pathogens in public health laboratory settings
- Support the development of surveillance system specifications x
- Analyse and interpret genomic surveillance data for public health action
- Manage delivery of agreed work programme: including timely reporting to stakeholders
- Evaluate existing genomic surveillance systems in partner countries and support them to act on results more widely
- Evaluate acute response to incidents and outbreaks, and use to improve standards and consistency across the team
- Provide technical input across wider activities of the NVAP team e.g., genomics, bioinformatics and other complimentary programmes of work
- Identify publication and funding opportunities to support and showcase genomic epidemiology activities of bilateral partner in collaboration with internal UKHSA experts
- Write scientific abstracts and manuscripts and present these at conferences
- Develop and deliver training materials on variant and genomic epidemiology

Essential:
- Educated to degree level with a MSc in Epidemiology, or allied discipline
- Experience in epidemiology for outbreak investigations and experience in performing analytical epidemiology in outbreak situations
- Knowledge of principles and practice of surveillance, including data management, data transmission, data security, data quality, data analysis including descriptive statistics and graphics and data reporting
- Experience of complex and/or sensitive health data analyses as well as experience of interpreting and evaluating epidemiological dat
Desirable:
- PhD or equivalent publication record in relevant subject
- Experience of research activities
- Suitable publication record (3+ papers including 1+ first author)
- Grant writing experience
Selection process details:
STAGE 1 - APPLICATION & SIFT:

STAGE 2 INTERVIEW
This competition will involve an interview by video.
As part of the process, candidates will be invited to interview which will involve an in-depth discussion of your previous experience and professional competence in relation to the criteria set out in the Person Specification.

Candidates will also be asked to participate in a session where they will be required to prepare and deliver a 5-minute presentation to the panel. This will be followed by a question-and-answer segment. The presentation will be designed to assess each candidates experience in line with the requirements of the role. Successful candidates must pass a disclosure and barring security check. Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed.
