Grade & Salary - Grade 7. National banding -£51,824- £61,414 per annum. Outer London -£53,812- £63,252 per annum. Inner London - £55,799- £65,089 per annum.

Main duties of the job

  • Working with the Team Lead, identify epidemiological insight needs within given lead areas, conduct complex public health analyses and interpret data, making appropriate recommendations and translating it into public health action.
  • Take a lead role in writing reports, ad hoc and peer-reviewed publications, including conducting systematic and scoping literature reviews.
  • Contribute to the planning, implementation, and maintenance of high-quality epidemiological outputs to meet stakeholder needs.
  • Coordinate delivery of agreed work programme; build and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders and partners across the DAS Group, wider UKHSA and other colleagues as appropriate to role.
  • Enhance the science base by publication of findings and presentation of data at conferences
  • Effective line management of identified staff, ensuring flexibility and capacity to meet the team's needs.

About us

We are looking for an enthusiastic and competent Principal Epidemiologist to join our Epidemiological Insight team within the Advanced Analytics Division and the wider Analytics and Data Science (A&DS) Directorate. A&DS is part of the Data, Analytics and Surveillance (DAS) Group, within the United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA)

The team supports the agency's preparedness and response functions by providing robust epidemiological knowledge and expertise to inform the evidence base of mathematical modelling and advanced analytical assessments. It does this by delivering high-quality qualitative and quantitative analyses across a broad range of infectious diseases of public health importance to the UK and international populations, including high-consequence and CBRN biological agents.

This post will provide senior scientific support to the team and wider divisional priorities as identified through business-as-usual and as part of UKHSA incident response, effectively collaborating with other internal and external partners. You will manage technical and analytical aspects of epidemiological insight activities and support a team to carry out these tasks. You will drive projects to produce evidence-based assessments; reviewing and interpreting epidemiological and infectious disease literature to make recommendations and inform decision-making which may have long-term impacts on the UK's health.

This work will require you to have a high degree of autonomy and professional accountability.

You will need to have previous experience in developing and managing projects or delivering high-quality scientific outputs, in order to coordinate delivery of an agreed work programme and ensure timely reporting and excellent partnership working. You will need to have close attention to detail and be highly motivated.

Effective liaison with colleagues is key to influence decision-making and this role requires you to build and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders and partners across the DAS Group, wider UKHSA and other colleagues as appropriate. At times you will need to manage challenging and/or conflicting subject matter problems in day-to-day workload referring/escalating as appropriate.

You will be a visible, positive and competent role model and motivator, adopting a senior leadership role for scientists and representing the team at UKHSA and external scientific fora and publish and present scientific papers in collaboration with health, public health, academic and other partners.

As a member of the Advanced Analytics Division management team, you will be involved with business planning and development of strategies. You will support senior managers to ensure day-to-day operational delivery of the divisional functions, its responsibilities and ensuring resources are fully equipped and fit-for-purpose; deputising where appropriate, using leadership approaches and skills. Effective line management of defined staff is required to ensure flexibility and capacity to meet the teams needs.

Essential criteria

  • Educated to degree level in relevant subject or equivalent experience
  • MSc in Epidemiology, or allied discipline or equivalent experience/education
  • Knowledge of principles and practice of epidemiology, including data analysis - descriptive statistics and graphics and data reporting
  • Experience of interpreting and evaluating complex epidemiological data, sensitive health data analyses and performing analytical epidemiology
  • Demonstrable experience of public health, health protection or epidemiology including epidemiology for incident investigations
  • Knowledge and experience of common statistical tests, modelling and analyses and interpret results appropriately, including for research purposes
  • Experience of effective line management
  • Able to build and maintain effective relationships with co-workers and key stakeholders, negotiate with senior stakeholders on difficult and controversial issues, and present complex and sensitive information to large and influential groups
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with proven presentation and scientific report writing skills, including conducting high-quality literature reviews
  • Proven capability to plan over short, medium and long-term timeframes and adjust plans and resource requirements accordingly
