Main duties of the job

This role is that of a leader of a small (1 - 4 others) analytical team. As post-holder you would, in conversation with the Head of Modelling, be expected to set the scientific and technical direction of one or two (depending on skillset and demands) of the team's work-packages and perform the day-to-day line-management of that section of the team. The team's work-packages currently comprise:

  • Source-term estimation - locating pathogen sources from case data
  • In-host dynamics - how a pathogen behaves inside the human body
  • Model frameworks - high level code for the rapid production of models
  • Neural networks for model emulation and machine vision - using the power of inferential tools to speed up models and detect health threats

You would also be expected to provide technical expertise, ensure that scientific and other outputs from the work-package(s) are produced in a timely way, and mentor more junior staff to ensure they reach their full potential.

You should be established in your career and so able to direct people in the use of a wide range of different mathematical, statistical, and computational techniques. Similarly, you will be able to ensure a successful progression of projects and contribute to developing the project portfolio within the team through grant applications and other funding opportunities.

About us

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, competent mathematical modeller and section lead to join our Mathematical Modelling for Emergency Preparedness, Resilience, and Response (EPRR) team within the multidisciplinary Advanced Analytics division. This team exists to provide high quality scientific advice to government on new and emerging infectious disease threats to the public and how their impact may be mitigated. We have a particular remit in applying quantitative analyses to complex and novel situations especially for those where the source of the disease is unknown.
