Main duties of the job
The postholder will research, implement and report statistical and mathematical analyses of epidemiological data at the UKHSA. A strong background in data processing and analysis - using programming languages such as R or Python - will be essential to explore large existing datasets on COVID-19, Mpox, and other public health concerns. The role will require an agile and inquisitive approach to work, with the candidate pursuing their research independently while working in collaboration with an experienced team of quantitative epidemiologists and data scientists.
About us
The Infectious Disease Modelling team uses a range of tools from statistics, epidemic modelling, and data science to provide timely insights into key public health questions. As part of the COVID-19 response, the work included: forecasting hospital demand, estimating key epidemiological parameters, real-time analysis and surveillance of novel variants, modelling of early indicators for outbreak detection, and real-time estimation of disease severity. The team has been heavily involved in the response to the recent Mpox outbreak, and are developing work packages looking at climate sensitive infectious diseases. The team collaborates closely with colleagues across directorates within the UKHSA, as well as teams within the NHS, Cabinet Office, and academia.
The Infectious Disease Modelling team are part of the All Hazards Intelligence Directorate. The work of the directorate spans a range of analytical objectives and themes across descriptive epidemiology, genomics, cluster analysis, vaccines, behavioural science, infectious disease and biostatistical modelling, strategic research partnerships and innovation, environmental monitoring, health protection, and product development/delivery. The directorate has strong links to other areas within UKHSA, as well as connections across Government with the NHS and DHSC, and with academia.

The post will provide scientific support in infectious disease modelling to the epidemiological investigation of incidents and outbreaks of COVID-19, winter-related pathogens, and climate-sensitive infectious disease, in collaboration with partners. This will include technical and analytical aspects of epidemiological outbreak investigations and modelling.
The post holder will participate in epidemiological modelling, public health scientific analyses and writing reports on specific projects, regular and ad hoc commissions and publications.
Duties will include compiling evidence, including area and population context, influencers, early signals, outbreak indicators, and direct UKHSA result data. The post holder will be expected to perform hypothesis testing and analysis to understand the effectiveness of different interventions. They will also be expected to engage with partners in wider government, academia, and the private sector to gain access to new data sources and information. Due to the fast-moving nature of the work, the post holder will be expected to be able to work well independently.
