Job responsibilities

Your main duties would include:

Ensuring efficient running and contribute to routine maintenance of all equipment, which will include high cost, complex equipment requiring calibration and regular maintenance.

You would need to assist in the maintenance of stocks of reagents and consumables, ensuring that they are received, stored, verified and used appropriately.

You would be required to assist in the improvement and development of the service, in the interests of efficiency and in order to meet changing demands

You would need to support the implementation of new methods and technologies into the laboratory, in order to maximise quality and efficiency of testing.

Support and participate in FW&E surveys, trials and research work and projects in collaboration with other senior staff of the FW&E network.

The postholder would assist the Quality Manager in ensuring good working practices and to maintain a high standard of work especially with respect to Internal Quality Control and External Quality Assessment schemes

STAGE 1 - APPLICATION & SIFT:

You will be required to complete an application form and a statement of suitability of up to 1250 words. This will be assessed in line with the advertised essential criteria please do provide evidence of how you meet this.

If you are successful at this stage, you will progress to an interview.

STAGE 2 INTERVIEW

This competition will involve an interview by video.

As part of the process, candidates will be invited to interview which will involve an in-depth discussion of your previous experience and professional competence in relation to the criteria set out in the Person Specification.

Please note that as part of the selection process, you may be asked to undertake a presentation or test at interview.

You will also be asked to provide information within the Employer/ Activity history section of the application form. This is equivalent to the information you would provide on a CV, setting out your career history.

Person Specification

Education & Qualification

Essential

• oBSc (Hons) Science degree or BTEC with previous experience in microbiology OR equivalent experience
• oUnderstanding of quality management systems, especially in relation to UKAS Accreditation
• oHave extensive working knowledge of laboratory areas, including both practical and theoretical knowledge of the various methods employed
• oExperience of automated testing systems
• oCompetent in a wide range of laboratory procedures
• oWell-developed physical skills, especially in the manipulation of pipettes and other laboratory equipment. Also must be adept and precise when handling samples etc
• oAbility to follow and communicate instructions, ideas and opinions clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
• oCommitment to and focused on quality, promotes high standards in all they do

Desirable

• oEvidence of continual professional development; willingness to train as a Food Examiner
• oWorking knowledge of FW&E laboratory principles; development of special interest and expertise in one or more areas of the laboratory, for example quality, R&D, safety, training, IT
