Montserrat - Obstetrician and Gynaecologist (OB/GYN)

Job summary

This role is located in a British Overseas Territory, therefore UK legislation such as the Data Protection Act (2018) and the Equality Act (2010), or similar, may not apply.

An Obstetrician and Gynaecologist provides inpatient services, outpatient gynaecology clinics, and procedural services, including colposcopy, which is a core component of the national cervical cancer prevention and screening programme.

Main duties of the job

  • Clinical - be responsible for the assessment and lead the clinical management of all patients admitted to the Obstetrics Ward, including the conduct of daily ward rounds, emergency care, and participation in the on-call rota, ensuring safe, timely, and evidence-based care.
  • Administrative - Participate in departmental and hospital management meetings. Provide supervision and performance feedback to midwives.
  • Advisory - The Obstetrician and Gynaecologist will provide strategic, clinical, and advisory leadership in strengthening Maternal, Newborn, and Womens Health services across primary and secondary care.

About us

Montserrat, referred to as the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom, located in the Lesser Antilles chain and has a land mass of 39.5 square miles.

The delivery of public health care on Montserrat is the responsibility of the Government and is administered under the ambit of the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) with a staff complement of two hundred and forty (240). Working in Montserrat allows you to be part of this small but dynamic team. There are four (4) health centres, one (1) dental clinic, one (1) hospital and residential facilities for the vulnerable. The Glendon Hospital occupies a renovated school, in the north of the island, as a result of volcanic activity that commenced in 1995. Volcanic activity remains low and is constantly monitored by the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO). Construction of a purpose-built hospital began in April 2025 and is scheduled to be completed in April 2027.

  • Specialist qualification in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from a recognised institution
  • Experience in performing and interpreting pregnancy-related ultrasounds and electronic foetal monitoring
  • Knowledge of relevant procedures, policies, and international standards for maternal and new-born care, with current registration with a recognised national or state medical board.

Desirable

  • Technical and professional qualifications required:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Paediatric/Advanced Paediatric Life Support would be an asset or to be completed within an agreed timeframe after appointment
