Job summary

We are delighted to offer a Surgical Staff Grade Fixed term position role for 12 months. The post is a 14 PA contract, please see the job descriptions for full details of this and remuneration.

The holder will work with other medical and nursing staff to provide a broad range of elective and emergency surgical and medical care to patients in Jersey covering Colorectal, Bariatric, Upper GI, Vascular and Breast surgical specialities, as well as participation in an Emergency Surgery service.

These posts provide an excellent opportunity for those wishing to gain further surgical skills and knowledge while working in a UK medical system.

Surgical Staff Grades and Associate Specialists provide Emergency out of hours on-call together with a named Consultant. On-call is non-resident and is supported by a F1 or F2 resident doctor.

Main duties of the job

Job responsibilities

Off-Island Specialist services

Transfers to the mainland by air ambulance occur regularly, and on occasion out of hours. The post holder may be required to take part in such transfers, subject to holding the necessary qualifications. The main involvement in transferring patients to the UK involves communication and liaison and not having to physically transfer the patient.

Training

The post holder will be expected to participate in the training of Medical Staff for whom he/she is responsible and ensure that training and learning needs are identified and facilitated. Resident doctors will be appraised at appropriate intervals.

Governance

The post holder will be expected to take part in management and audit activities and represent the service at Hospital meetings, as agreed with colleagues. The post holder will be expected to be fully involved in a Risk Management programme and support the Governance agenda.

The successful candidate should be adaptable, flexible and innovative in order to meet the ongoing challenges within the service. The post is 10 + 4 PA contract which includes 1 SPA

The final job plan will be agreed with the Clinical lead, Chief of Service, and ratified by the Group Medical Director. The post holders job plan will be reviewed annually and will be appraised according to the current guidance.

On-call commitment for this post 1:5 week day and 1:5 weekend, remunerated within the job plan and 4% on call availability supplement. There is a resident doctor (full shift) and a Consultant on-call also.

Emergency, Out-patient and Elective General (Upper GI and Colo-Rectal) Surgery

Emergency, Screening, Out-Patient and Elective Breast Surgery Service

Vascular Out-patient and Day Surgery Service.

The department has a suite of offices for Consultants, non-career grade Doctors, Secretaries, Nursing and Secretarial Support.

The hospital has a main theatre department comprising 4 operating theatres.

There is a dedicated Day Surgery Unit which provides two further operating theatres.

All theatres are equipped to a high standard and 2 main theatres have ultra-clean air-flow systems.

There is a dedicated Endoscopy Unit and extensive out-patient facilities.

The department uses one dedicated ward for General Surgery and Urology with some female patients also admitted to the combined ward with Gynaecology.

There is a dedicated breast clinical oncology unit which is located adjacent to the Breast Screening and Diagnostic Imaging Unit. Three Radiologists share the Breast Imaging Service, which is particularly well equipped and includes both screening and symptomatic patients.

There is a dedicated Endoscopy Unit and extensive Out-patient facilities.

The post holder will be expected to admit acute urological conditions (with senior support) and help to look after urological patients on the ward, on a day-to-day basis. This is with close support from the Urological Consultant and Mr Pai.

There is a Consultant led Urology service. On-call staff will handover patients to the Urologists during the morning rounds.

The Surgical Departments encompass a diverse, exciting and very busy service that strives to provide safe quality care that meets the needs of all patient groups. We have many challenges ahead to maintain this quality service but the hospital has a committed highly skilled team who will take the service forward to continually improve and implement changes in practice to deliver this care.
