Health and Care Jersey is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and dynamic substantive Consultant Physician in General Medicine to join an enthusiastic consultant body managing general internal medicine.
The primary commitment is to general medical services but there are opportunities for suitably qualified candidates to have a special interest in one of Respiratory, Acute Medicine, Frailty and Stroke.
Teaching and Research
The department is recognised for Foundation Doctors from the Wessex deanery and medical students from Southampton and active teaching is encouraged in this role. It is expected that the post holder will participate in the training of medical staff and ensure that the training and learning needs are identified and facilitated. This includes educational support for the clinical fellows recruited directly to Health and Care Jersey.
The post holder should deliver training to a range of professionals across the multi-disciplinary team.
Opportunities for participating in research are supported when appropriate. The Health and Care Jersey has a policy for professional leave and is supportive of external duties for the good of the wider profession.
On Call Rota
The post holder will be expected to participate in the General medical on call rota. This is currently 1:8 including weekends and public holidays. The on-call consultant is required to do a ward round on Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays. The frequency of call out from home is very low (less than 1 per month).

There will be an opportunity to develop your specialist interest in accordance with the medical care group plans. Close working with the relevant tertiary centres will be supported

Medical Services Care Group
Medicine in Jersey is fully age and specialty integrated. There are 4 medical wards, Plemont, Rozel, Bartlett and Corbiere. A 5-bedded Enhanced Care Area is sited on AAU and there is a separate intensive care unit led by intensivists. There is also an Ambulatory Emergency Care Unit led by the Acute Medicine Department. There is a 25 bed Acute Assessment Unit. SAS doctors are responsible for the day-to-day management of their patients on the wards with the help of clinical fellows, FY1 or FY2 doctor whom they closely supervise. On call, the SAS doctor is responsible for seeing patients referred by the Emergency Department and reviewing patients admitted to the AAU by GPs in conjunction with the Acute Medicine team. A core responsibility of the Medicine Care Group is the provision of a safe acute medical service. The Care Group always provides named Consultant supervision for non-Consultants and ensures that prompt review and treatment is provided for acute medical emergencies referred by General Practitioners or the Emergency Department. Consultants are responsible for producing and updating guidelines for the management of acute medical emergencies in their specialist area.
Care Group Statistics
There are 83 medical beds. 12-20 acute medical admissions on average during each 24-hour period on call within a range of approximately 6-24. There are approximately 4,500 medical admissions annually.

Safeguarding

The post holder will share responsibility for the safeguarding and welfare of all children, adults and/or families within their care and should be familiar with the signs and symptoms of abuse and know what to do if any such concerns are raised. As this position will involve working in regulated activity, the successful applicant will be subject to an Enhanced DBS disclosure as part of their pre-employment clearances. Any offer of employment is subject to satisfactory clearances being obtained.
Infection Control
All employees have a duty to comply with Health and Care Jersey guidelines and policies in relation to Infection Prevention and Control. The post holder will have a duty to ensure that they minimise the risk of infection and infectious diseases. This responsibility includes minimising the risk by highlighting any concerns to the appropriate person.
Registration
It is a legal requirement for all doctors to be on the General Medical Councils Specialist Register before being able to take up a consultant post. Specialty trainees are able to apply for a consultant appointment provided the expected date of the award of their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (or recognised equivalent if outside the UK) falls no more than 6 months after the interview date for the Consultant position and candidates will be asked to provide proof of this prior to shortlisting.
