Job summary
To provide emergency and routine care in ENT surgery for the
population of Jersey, as part of a multidisciplinary team. The successful
applicant will become the main provider of Head & Neck cancer surgery on
island.
There is
a dedicated ENT Outpatients Department, with each consultation room being
equipped with the expected required equipment (microscopes and separate
endoscope stacks). Inpatients are
admitted to general surgical wards and children are admitted to the dedicated
paediatric ward which this on site. Consultants are provided with offices and a
shared secretary.
The
department carries out the full range of ENT services expected for a large
district general hospital including middle ear surgery, full house FESS,
thyroid surgery and paediatric ENT surgery above the age of 2yrs. Skull base
surgery, cochlear implantation and free-flap surgery are undertaken at
Southampton University Hospitals and advanced paediatric surgery is undertaken
at Evelina Hospital in London. In terms of Head & Neck cancer,
laryngectomies, neck dissections and major pedicle flaps are undertaken on
island, with microvascular work being referred to the tertiary centres in UK.
Medical oncology is provided on island but radiotherapy is undertaken in
Southampton.
Main duties of the job
The
successful candidate will be part of a team of 5 clinicians responsible for the
care of all acute and non-acute patients referred to the ENT department at
Jersey General Hospital. The candidate will be taking up a newly created post
in addition to the current 3 Consultants and 1 Associate Specialist. Duties
will include attendance at fixed outpatient clinics, fixed operating theatre
sessions (plus additional emergency sessions as required) and ward rounds as
needed to monitor care of elective and acute in-patients. The candidate will
share a 1:4 on-call commitment with non-prospective cover, which is remunerated
through time off in-lieu. The candidate will also be expected to attend and
contribute to the weekly Skin Cancer and Head & Neck MDTs as well as a
video-link SSMDT with Head and Neck team at Southampton Hospital.
Private
practice is welcomed. Because there is only one hospital on Island, consultants
are permitted - and encouraged - to operate on their private patients at the
hospital during their timetabled operating sessions, so long as they meet their
requirement for public operating as detailed on their job plan. The private activity is unfunded by HCJ and
this is factored to into the total PA allocation in the consultants annual job
plan.
About us
Health care professionals in Jersey enjoy more autonomy and the opportunity to shape the public health service in a small island on a development journey.
Jersey is a unique place to live and work and being a Doctor in Jersey is different. As a crown dependency, we are an Island nation which includes our own Health Care Service. And it is a service on the move with the new Enid Quenault health care facility opened in 2023 and commitment to improve and invest in further healthcare facilities including a brand-new acute hospital. Our patients and health professionals are at the centre of all we do, as a doctor you have more time to care and we give more time to you, for your development and wellbeing as well as the opportunity to carry out private patient work.
Teaching and Research
Health and Care Jersey is recognised for junior doctors and active teaching is encouraged in this role. It is expected that the post holder is participating in the training of medical staff and that the candidate will ensure that the training and learning needs are identified and facilitated. This includes educational support for the clinical fellows recruited directly to Health & Care Jersey.
Opportunities for participating in research are supported when appropriate. The Health & Care Jersey has an advantageous policy for professional leave and is supportive of external duties for the good of the wider profession.
We welcome multi centre research clinical trials if approved from a body such as NHS
Job description
Job responsibilities
The
department has very close links with the audiology department, who are
adjacent, and there is a small multidisciplinary team of allied health
professionals who maintain a special interest in head & neck pathology,
including a speech therapist, a dietician and a parenteral feeding nurse. The
hospital has a dedicated upper GI general surgeon and a maxillofacial surgeon
who shares some head & neck cancer work.
The post holder will be required to participate in a 1:4
oncall rota. There is currently no middle tier of on-call for ENT, meaning
that the Consultants and Associate Specialist are first on-call, liaising
directly with the well-staffed ED department, as well as taking GP referrals.
Slots are pre-allocated in OPD clinics to allow for the review of emergency
patients during working hours. Jersey operates on a different system of
remuneration for on-call whereby sessions are allocated in lieu of contracted commitments
rather than financial remuneration, with the 1:4 on-call attracting 2
programmed activities. There is a possibility the role may change to a 1-5 with
investment in the workforce.
The
successful applicant will also be required to contribute to the teaching of
nursing staff, elective medical students and any resident doctors spending time
in the department. There will be the opportunity for undertaking Educational
Supervision to foundation Years doctors for those who have done the necessary
educational training.
This job description is intended as a guide to the general scope of
duties and is not intended to be definitive or restrictive. It is expected that
some of the duties will change over time and this description will be subject
to review in consultation with the post holder.
The jop plan includes a minimum of 1.5 SPA for mandatory/essential CPD
for the purposes of personal revalidation and safe working. There is scope for
a further 1 SPA where clinicians undertake optional SPA activities such as
Educational Supervision, Teaching, Research, Quality Assurance work. Such
additional activity above the contracted 10PAs (up to 11PAs) will be funded
(non-pensionable) so along as the activity is agreed on the annual job plan.
