Associate Specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has come up to join the Oral and Maxillofacial team in Jersey as an associate specialist. This is a permanent post. An Associate Specialist post has been created to reflect changes in the provision of our service. The current Oral and Maxillofacial service has two consultant surgeons. As part of on call duties the successful applicant will be required to provide a broad range of general Oral and Maxillofacial surgery and facial trauma management. The Associate Specialist will be expected to work closely with the 2 existing Consultants to assist in the development of the Oral and Maxillofacial Service.

It is essential that the applicant has a willingness to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service. Jersey General Hospital provides healthcare for 100,000 people. With an ageing population, the department is busy meeting the demands placed on it.

Main duties of the job

At present the Department consists of 2 consultant surgeons. The service is located within the Dental department where facilities are shared between the Orthodontic service and Community Dental services.

The applicant will take part in a 1:3 oral maxillofacial on call rota for trauma.

There are weekly MDT meetings in Head and Neck Oncology held here in Jersey with Consultant Histopathology and Consultant Radiology support and there is a video link MDT meetings with Southampton Head and Neck Oncology MDT.and there are weekly MDT meetings via video link with Southampton Head and Neck Oncology service where radiotherapy is provided.

There are elective outpatient clinics and weekly elective operating sessions for consultants. Trauma cases are treated in the emergency theatre.

The Oral and Maxillofacial Unit has historically provided a broad range of maxillofacial trauma service is here on Island. The applicant will need to provide care for the full breadth of trauma cases excluding those patients that require transferral for neurosurgical management. Head injury patients are admitted under the care of the trauma and orthopaedic team

The Oral Maxillofacial Unit provides a broad range of management including maxillofacial trauma, management of dentofacial deformity, the management of temporal mandibular joint disease including temporal mandibular joint arthroscopy, oral medicine and the management of facial pain, implant and bone grafting reconstruction of oncology patients as well as the management of disorders of tooth eruption and dentoalveolar surgery.

The main Operating Theatre Department comprises four operating theatres, one of which is reserved as an emergency theatre in which the Trauma List takes place each day. Two of the elective theatres have ultra clean air filtration systems both of which are used for orthopaedic operating lists. Currently, a refurbishment program of our Main Theatres is being undertaken.

There is a dedicated Day Surgery Unit, which was recently been refurbished and expanded to provide a second operating theatre. A minor operating suite is also available.

There is a Surgical Intensive Care Unit which is also used as a High Dependency Unit. This unit is managed on a day-to-day basis by the Anaesthetic Department lead by three Consultant Anaesthetists with a special interest in intensive care.

CT scanning is available including a 24 hour on call emergency service including the Consultant Radiologist on call. MRI scanning is available during the day but an out of hours service is currently not available
