Staff Grade - Emergency Medicine

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Emergency Department at Jersey General Hospital. We are seeking to appoint a dynamic and forward thinking staff grade doctor to join our dedicated Emergency Medicine team.

This position compromises 10 PAs and does not include on-call commitment, although the postholder will be expected to work day, late and night shifts as part of a full rota. We are committed to continuous professional development, offering a generous study leave budget. Main duties of the job

The post holder will ensure the provision of high-quality emergency care within the Emergency Department. The post holder will be expected to be competent in the management of the normal range of emergency medical conditions and injuries and will be expected to supervise junior trainees and medical students. Staff grade doctors are also asked to assist at follow up clinics within the ED. The post holder will be expected to take operational responsibility for the department as required and in particular, when they are the most senior doctor present, such as weekends and evenings and overnight providing a role model to the junior medical staff and nurses. On designated days the post holder will be responsible for checking and acting on X-ray and pathology results, and for validating discharge letters.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The Emergency Department team consists of 9 Consultants supported by 15 Middle Grade doctors (including these posts), 5 Foundation Yr. 2 and 3 GP trainees and 7 clinical fellows (a total of 15 SHO junior rota) & 5 ENPs (ENP provide 9am-9pm 7 days a week service).

With 40,000 attendances per year and no other hospital on Island the Emergency Department provides exposure to the full range of acute emergency presentations.

The appointee will contribute to the Middle Grade tier of the Emergency Department Rota which includes 24/7 cover.

The post also attracts 1 Support Professional Activity and Study leave allocation.

The post holder will be a tier 4 staff grade therefore will at times have to be in charge of the department without a consultant being on-site.

Clinical Duties / Rota

The postholder will ensure the provision of high-quality emergency care within the Emergency Department. The postholder will be expected to be competent in the management of the normal range of emergency medical conditions and injuries and will be expected to supervise junior trainees and medical students. Staff grade doctors are also asked to assist at follow up clinics within the ED.

The postholder will be expected to take operational responsibility for the department as required and in particular, when they are the most senior doctor present, such as weekends and evenings and overnight providing a role model to the junior medical staff and nurses.

The middle grade tier operates a self-rostering system which is run prospectively for Annual Leave and Study Leave. This allows a greater degree of flexibility than a rolling rota. This post will cover early, late & night cover seven days a week.

Clinical Governance and Departmental Development

Along with the Consultants the postholder will be expected to participate in the delivery of good clinical governance. Specifically, the postholder will liaise with senior doctors and members of other departments in the development of multidisciplinary, evidence-based guidelines, protocols and care pathways. The post attracts 1PA for Supporting Professional Activity and a Study leave

allocation. The post holder will perform duties and CPD requirements to fulfil appraisal requirements and to contribute to the non-clinical activities of the department.

It is equipped to a high standard and has had a recent refurbishment which provides a delightful bright environment to work in opposite one of St Heliers parklands. Jersey is currently receiving significant inward investment in its health service which is completely independent of the NHS.

Being an island-based emergency department, there is exposure to all types of emergency work. There are also occasions when patients need to be air-evacuated to a main land hospital. For this we have access to three aircraft fully dedicated to aeromedical evacuation. The JETS (Jersey Emergency Transfer Service) team will provide training for doctors involved in island to mainland transfers. Doctors involved in aero-medical transfers are paid an additional fee per transfer.
