An exciting opportunity has arisen for a midwife to join Jerseys maternity services. This is a rotational post commencing in the inpatient setting with planned rotations to the antenatal clinic and community services.

Main duties of the job

All midwife practitioners will be Registered Midwives, accountable for their own midwifery practice and will be able to fulfil the following role through the ability to make decisions with current protocols and principles of care in compliance with the NMCs Midwives Rules and code of Midwifery Practice.

The post holder is required to take responsibility as a prime care provider in either the hospital or community setting. They will be confident in providing midwife led care and should have 2 years post qualifying experience.

1. To work as a midwife providing the full range of care needs to develop, implement and evaluate care throughout the antenatal , intrapartum and postnatal period for women and their families.

2. Interacts with medical staff and other members of the multi-disciplinary team when deviations from the norm occur to promote a healthy outcome for mother and infant.

3. To provide effective leadership and act as a good role model.

4. To supervise and teach qualified and unqualified staff acting as a mentor.

5. Work autonomously within guidelines and spheres of professional practice.

Clinical Practice

Support working relationships and effective communication with the Multidisciplinary team in both the in-patient and community service. Interact with external agencies i.e. Social Care.

Responsible for the assessment and planning of the midwifery care needs of clients in the hospital and community environment.

Attending to clients who have limited or no English arranging interpreting services to assist with communication. Ensuring any impairments to communication are understood and care facilitated.

Provide telephone or personal advice to women who have concerns about their pregnancy, care or the services available.

Receive telephone calls from GPs, laboratory staff or other health workers regarding concerns or risk to client or unborn child's health make appropriate referrals to Primary or Secondary care practitioners.

Input data onto the Maternity Information Systems, ensuring information is prompt, correct and outcomes updated.

Utilise hospital information technology systems to obtain patient information or test results.

Adhere to HCS Polices in relation to information governance and Patient confidentiality.

Clinical Risk assessment and examination of patients, monitoring of observations and reporting or escalating of abnormal findings to medical staff or midwife in charge.

Provide support and care to the woman during the antepartum/intrapartum and postpartum period, supporting the normal physiological process.

Identify and report any changes from the norm or emergency situations to senior midwife or medical practitioner.

To assist and support the medical staff with medical procedures, remain competent to support instrumental deliveries and assisting at operative deliveries.

Assist experienced practitioners in neonatal resuscitation following birth.

Caring for clients with medical complications who require increased dependency on health professionals during the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum period.

To provide midwifery expertise and advice, working as an autonomous practitioner accountable to the senior midwife.

Discuss and action any concerns re: safeguarding.

To deputise and as appropriate take responsibility for the coordination of the ward or department.

Participate in audit, KPI and data collection.

To be responsible for the safe storage of records in line with HCS policy.

To provide telephone or direct advice on maternity and midwifery care to clients and professionals when necessary, and act as a resource for staff.

Promote Parent Education for expectant/new mothers and their partners making appropriate referrals to universal offers of antenatal education.

Education, training and development

Undertake appropriate activities to update professional knowledge skills and demonstrate.

evidence of continued professional development in preparation for revalidation.

Contribute to the positive ward learning environment by example.

Act as a positive role model for less experienced midwives and staff and to contribute to guideline and policy development.
