Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Lead Pharmacist Oncology and Technical Services for a fixed 12 month contract. You will be the Accountable Pharmacist for the Technical Services Unit where we produce injectable chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition to a wide variety of the islands patients.

You will provide professional leadership in the co-ordination of technical pharmacy services and training of staff including other pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, work in close collaboration with other professionals and follow set departmental procedures and policies, as well as provide clinical support to the Oncology/Haematology unit.

You will be involved in supporting a number of new future developments. We currently use Wellsky systems, and both Envair positive pressure isolators and Cirrus negative pressure isolators for production within the Technical Services unit. The hospital has recently implemented EPMA on the wards, with roll out to our outpatient clinics underway.

The implementation of a chemotherapy EPMA is also to be implemented in the future.As part of this role you will also sit on the Pharmacy Operational Management team, negotiating with other service managers to manage complex operational issues on a day to day basis.You must be registered, or eligible for registration, with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Previous Technical services experience is essential, with additional experience on Oncology wards.

Main duties of the job

Lead, manage and develop the Technical Pharmacy Service and team in order to ensure the safe provision of sterile products to patients. This includes cytotoxic chemotherapy and intravenous nutrition. Deliver a highly specialist clinical pharmacy service to Oncology and Haematology.

The post holder is accountable to the Pharmacy Services Manager for the implementation and delivery of the pharmacy strategy for Technical Pharmacy Services, and to the Clinical Pharmacy Manager to deliver specialist clinical pharmacy services

Job responsibilities

1. As Accountable Pharmacist for the aseptic unit, lead and manage Technical Pharmacy Services, in order to deliver high quality and safely prepared products which comply with relevant guidance and medicines legislation.

2. Develop and maintain quality assurance practices and procedures, ensuring that all production activities are controlled through compliance with approved procedures and supported by appropriate documentation so that any products produced are safe for patient administration.

3. Assess risks associated with aseptic preparation, including hazardous substances and develop strategies to manage risks and ensure the relevant COSHH documentation is in place.

4. Performance manage direct reports, and supervise and train staff working in Technical Services, ensuring they achieve the required level of competency to support the delivery of a high-quality service to patients.

5. Implement the strategic direction of Technical Pharmacy Services and support the delivery of the strategic objectives of the overall Pharmacy Service, to ensure that services meet legislative requirements and best practice standards.

6. Continuously monitor advances in clinical practice and identify areas for future development to ensure that the service is responsive to changing needs, particularly with regard to the development of Aseptic Dispensing Services.

7. Identify and obtain data required to monitor and evaluate the impact of Technical Pharmacy Services in order to inform practice and service improvement.

8. To ensure an up to date Technical Services Capacity Plan is in place and includes contingency plans to provide effective alternative service provision. To liaise with other healthcare professionals to prioritise work when demand exceeds capacity, maintaining safe working practices at all times.

9. Work as a member of the multi-professional health and care teams, providing highly complex clinical pharmacy advice and expertise to peers, patients and management to ensure that best practice is promoted and delivered to cancer patients.

10. Provide specialist information and independent evaluations about cancer treatments to support decisions by the Drugs and Therapeutics Committee and Individual Funding Request panels. Ensure cancer treatments are used in accordance with NICE guidance and formulary decisions.

11. To maintain skills to undertake the preparation of sterile products, involving the preparation of cytotoxic injections and infusions.
