Main duties of the job

Responsible for management and leadership of physiotherapy clinical services within the clinical speciality across care groups within Health & Community Services (H&CS), ensuring provision of timely, cost-effective, safe, sustainable and high quality diagnostic Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation services.

To be responsible for the implementation of effective clinical governance processes within their specialist clinical area, assimilating and critically analysing relevant literature and service data to inform service evaluation and clinical audit.

To work closely with the Head of the Physiotherapy Department as part of the Physiotherapy Senior Management Team, to advise regarding the development of the strategic direction of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation within Therapies.

To contribute to the operational management of the Department and the implementation of the strategic development of services.

To work as a highly specialist AHP assessing, formulating, diagnosing and treating a highly complex clinical caseload as an autonomous physiotherapy practitioner.

Provides clinical supervision to advanced physiotherapists and wider team members as well as expertise and highly specialist knowledge, training and advice to clients, their families and other Professionals in relation to Musculoskeletal rehabilitation and its evidenced based management, facilitating integration of specialist physiotherapy across care pathways.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To be responsible for the management and development of the Musculoskeletal Services within physiotherapy and across care groups within H&CS. To work closely with the Head of Physiotherapy and peer Principal Physiotherapists to determine the strategic direction for the Physiotherapy Department, in alignment with the Therapies strategy and H&CSs objectives.

To facilitate implementation of strategic objectives within the Musculoskeletal specialist service area and across the physiotherapy service, and to contribute to operational management of the physiotherapy service, deputising for the Head of Physiotherapy, taking responsibility for department wide issues, and facilitating effective and efficient running of the department. To participate in on call, as per local agreement

To work collaboratively with the Head of the Physiotherapy Department and peer Principal Physiotherapists in developing and implementing high quality patient, service and staff performance measurement systems for physiotherapy services. To undertake statistical analysis of service delivery data, cyclical service review and audit of the specialist service area. To recommend and implement service development based on outcomes, ensuring delivery of high quality, safe and sustainable services for the future. To develop quality standards for Musculoskeletal physiotherapy services which align with the components of clinical governance. To communicate a compelling vision of current and future physiotherapy services for Musculoskeletal within detailed, relevant business plans, which align to the Therapies Strategy and the Physiotherapy Department Business Plan.

To be responsible for development, implementation and review of end to end patient care pathways for patients managed within Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy specialist service. To develop effective networks within the health care environment, working collaboratively with other H&CS departments, primary care, the voluntary sector and other community agencies to deliver excellent clinical services with the available resources. To work closely with other physiotherapists, clinicians and consultants to ensure that Musculoskeletal physiotherapy services are integrated within a model of holistic patient care.

To build and maintain relationships with local, national and international organisations and colleagues relating to their specialist clinical area, developing new alliances and relationships where necessary. To benchmark Musculoskeletal specialist physiotherapy services against local/national targets and/or international standards, to inform and align with the Therapies Strategy. To contribute to and challenge best practice for physiotherapy management of adults with Musculoskeletal conditions, in line with discipline specific guidelines, clinical standards, & relevant evidence base. To develop a research & clinical audit profile in line with the Therapies Strategy and to present their own work at national/international conferences.

To work with a high degree of autonomy and demonstrate in depth clinical knowledge within Musculoskeletal physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Professionally responsible and accountable for physiotherapy triage, assessment, treatment and management of a caseload of complex (co-morbid; diagnostically challenging, complex psychosocial issues; requiring enhanced diagnostic workup; complex physical, cognitive and psychosocial impairments; associated mental health challenges; high prevalence of ACEs and trauma; life-limiting prognoses and end of life care) patients moving through Musculoskeletal pathways. Plans, implements and evaluates patient-centred, goal-orientated treatment and management programmes, utilising advanced specialist clinical reasoning skills and knowledge of relevant outcome measures. Undertakes duties of key-worker within multidisciplinary team, coordinates provision of holistic, seamless rehabilitation and care.

To provide Musculoskeletal specialist expertise to physiotherapy and H&CS, providing consultation, training and advice to physiotherapists and other professionals where necessary, ensuring a consistent and up to date appreciation of relevant rehabilitation science across the organisation and community. To maintain and oversee maintenance of accurate clinical records and data in accordance with professional standards, providing written clinical reports to external agencies to optimise multi-disciplinary, multi-agency working and holistic patient care.

To be responsible for empowering staff working within Musculoskeletal physiotherapy services through facilitation, coaching and mentoring; providing opportunities for effective professional discussion. Responsible for the supervision, professional development and appraisal of team members, in accordance with organisational policies and professional standards. To develop a training and development plan for Musculoskeletal services, in keeping with overall strategic objectives, and to provide direction and support for all staff wishing to engage with these opportunities. To implement a culture of cyclical performance review and improvement, ensuring 100% uptake of annual appraisal process for all staff within the physiotherapy speciality service. To motivate senior staff and physiotherapy workforce in the speciality service to achieve objectives demonstrated by key performance indicators. To maintain links with higher education institutions and/or professional bodies relating to specialist physiotherapy provision. To be involved in professional networks at local and national/international level and maintain links with practice and professional bodies/academic institutions.
