Job summary

The Occupational Therapy Service on the beautiful Island of Jersey are seeking an enthusiastic Senior 1 Occupational Therapist with experience in Neurological conditions (UK Band 7) to work within our Community Occupational Therapy Team.

The suitable candidate will hold a Degree in Occupational Therapy and be registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). Successful candidates will need to demonstrate, flexibility, reliability, adaptability, self-reliance, inner drive and the ability to problem solve.

Excellent leadership skills, a willingness to adapt current practices and work cohesively as part of a team are essential. The post holder must hold a clean driving license and have a vehicle available for work purposes. Main duties of the job

Clinically lead, develop and provide a highly specialist Occupational Therapy (OT) service for specified client groups, i.e. Neurotherapy, Acute In-patient, Mental Health, etc in order to promote functional/social independence, improve well-being and quality of life. Working as an autonomous practitioner implementing highly specialized assessment, evaluation, treatment and management of clients with complex needs.

Manage a clinical caseload of complex clients, developing a client caseload plan to ensure that cases are effectively managed within time and manpower constraints.

Provide a specialist professional resource for other disciplines and external agencies, so that the contribution of Occupational Therapy can be integrated within the total service provision. Provide advice & training to clients and their families on the management of their condition.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. Assess, develop interventions and monitor needs for a range of highly complex conditions within a specialist area. This includes specialist evaluation, diagnostic services, advice and training to clients, families and other professional staff on the management of physical and mental illness, injury or disability, prevention of deformity and deterioration, management of a client's environmental factors, vocational and educational opportunities and leisure activities. Undertake the role of care co-ordinator within a health and social services context, encompassing all required to assess for long term care benefit, and negotiate specialist care packages including budgeting.

2. Interpret, share, implement and monitor Government and National policies, standards and guidelines within specialist area to ensure that work is conducted in accordance with organization/service policies and within health and safety regulations.

3. Receive direct referrals from a range of clinical services and the general public, diagnosing and screening clients to identify how they may benefit from OT intervention, and providing subsequent comprehensive, holistic assessment using a variety of specialist clinical skills and individual intervention including prescription of Rehabilitation programmes and therapeutic activities in order to promote maximum independence of the client.

4. Independently manages cases/key working of disabled individuals and offers support to carers to promote effective outcomes that are met consistent with the client's needs, and to refer to other agencies as required.

5. Delivers professional evaluation, consultation, advice and training to clients, carers, relatives, other professional staff within the hospital and community, education and the voluntary sector as appropriate, in the use of specialised aids, assistive technology, adaptive bespoke equipment and major housing adaptations.

6. Maintain appropriate and timely client records of assessment, intervention and progress to monitor effectiveness of intervention, to facilitate treatment planning and long-term client management and to support the ongoing evaluation of the efficiency and effectiveness of the service to inform departmental planning purposes.

7. Develop & deliver highly specialised training programmes, including supporting the training of local students undertaking Masters and degree level training on island. Provide specialized information and advice to professional qualified and unqualified staff, voluntary organisations and family carers in order to improve the understanding of client need and promote effective management of the client's condition to minimize the impact on quality of life.

8. Act as a mentor and provide regular clinical supervision to OT staff, including those employed from locum agencies. Manage, advise and support qualified staff, trainees and support staff to ensure they receive the training they need to deliver their roles to the best of their abilities and to support their continuing professional development.

9. Support the appraisal of the service's performance, identifying unmet needs, investigating complaints relating to professional practice, implementing the use of outcome measures to evaluate the effectiveness of the service and interpreting and actioning developments in OT practice in order to make recommendations and contribute to organisational changes to improve the service.

10. Identify necessary major adaptations required for client's homes and schools to facilitate function, access and mobility, drawing up detailed building specifications for the specific requirements of the clients concerned and working closely with clients, architects: builders and Community and Government Departments to effect changes.
