PICU and emergency retrieval. The post attracts 10 PAs within the Health and
Community Services Department of the States of Jersey, based on but independent
of the NHS UK. The Consultant Pay Scale is competitive as are the tax
arrangements. A generous study leave budget allows Consultants to continue
their professional development.
If you are a General Paediatrician or a Community
Paediatrician with Neonatal skills and looking for an opportunity to lead a
fulfilling career in a beautiful and safe environment, then Jersey is the place
for you.
Full travelling expenses are paid from a UK port of
entry, with a generous relocation package available. The post attracts
residential qualifications and under Jersey Law, applicants must possess full
registration with the General Medical Council and hold a licence to practise.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will be part of a team providing acute and
ambulatory medical care to children in Jersey.
On call is 1:5 with consultant of the week. Prospective cover is provided in the form of
the consultant locum policy, which remunerates for cross covering colleagues
annual leave.
The post holder would be required to deliver 5.5 sessions of direct
clinical care a week, in the form of ward rounds and clinics. There are 2.5
sessions per week of SPA time and 2 sessions in lieu of on call duties. On call duties, evening and weekends are
non-resident, with an experienced SAS doctor on site 24 hours a day. Duties would include general paediatrics and
neonates. Management of paediatric and
neonatal emergencies is frequently necessary.
Because of the isolation on the island the post holder will need to be
confident dealing with these eventualities, with support from our local ITU and
intensivists, as well as PICU and NICU units in the UK. There are also close
working links with tertiary Centres like Southampton general hospital.
Ward admissions are typical of a small DGH in the NHS UK. We receive support from local surgical
specialities including ENT and general surgery, but some surgical and medical
problems need treatment in tertiary centres in the UK.

Our policy is that complicated pregnancies, including antenatally diagnosed
malformations, and deliveries expected before 30 weeks gestation, deliver in
tertiary units in the UK. Similarly we
will occasionally need to provide urgent care to critically ill children prior
to the arrival of the PICU retrieval team.
There is an active Departmental
