Job summary

The States of Guernsey are looking for an Oncology Specialist Nurse to join the Bulstrode Oncology Unit.

Main duties of the job

The Oncology Nurse Specialist is part of the wider oncology team based in Bulstrode Oncology Unit. The post holder will work alongside medical and nursing colleagues and as part of the team be responsible for providing compassionate care to patients undergoing treatment for a cancer diagnosis. This will involve administering systemic anti cancer therapy (SACT) assessing side effects and providing information and support to patients and family. The postholder is expected to update and maintain their knowledge on new and emerging cancer treatments.

To safely deliver SACT to a complex caseload of cancer patients in line with agreed local and national standards, demonstrating excellent venepuncture and cannulation skills and management of central venous access devices.

To work independently in nurse led pre-assessment clinics, assessing treatment related toxicities and escalating concerns to the senior nurse on duty or patients oncologist.

To deliver specialist education to patients, carers and other health professionals and act as a practice supervisor for students.

To continue to develop and maintain own clinical competency and knowledge of treatments, and skills in the safe administration of SACT and supportive treatments.

To demonstrate excellent communication skills, supporting patients through the treatment trajectory, identifying concerns and referring to other services as appropriate.

  • Minimum Qualification:
  • Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
  • SACT competency passport or equivalent.
  • Experience of working in an oncology setting.
  • Full Qualifications to be achieved by second gateway:
  • Advanced communication course.
  • Academic study at level 6 or above in area of cancer care.

Desirable

  • Key Criteria.
  • The ability to evidence how HSCs CARE Values are applied in practice.
  • Evidence of relevant CPD.
  • A high standard of communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to deal with complex and challenging situations in a calm and diplomatic manner.
  • The ability to effectively prioritise own workload and that of others.
  • The ability to work autonomously and also as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Commitment to self-development and the development of others.
  • Adaptable and responsive to changing service needs.
  • Ability to deal with stress in self and others, recognising when support is required.
