Job summary

The States of Guernsey are looking for a Band 6 Radiographer to join the Radiology Team based at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital for a hybrid ('60/40') role in X-Ray and Breast Imaging.

Main duties of the job

Specialist Band 6 Radiographers for X-ray and Breast Imaging are senior Radiographers responsible for the operational and day to day provision of X-ray and Breast imaging services. This hybrid role ensures high-quality, patient-centred imaging while maintaining compliance with IR(ME)R, IRR, and other regulatory standards. Post holders will uphold Guernseys Health & Social Care (HSC) CARE values; Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence in all aspects of service delivery. They will provide clinical supervision, seek to enhance service improvement, and support the professional development of other Radiography staff and student Radiographers.

Job responsibilities

Responsibility for Patient/Service User Care

Provide high quality imaging services within the X-ray (60%) and Breast Imaging (40%) environments, ensuring efficient workflow and high standards of patient care in line with Guernseys CARE values.

Act as a specialist practitioner performing and supervising a full range of radiographic and breast imaging examinations using a compassionate and respectful approach.

To provide high-quality and autonomous 2D and 3D Mammography imaging for both screening and symptomatic patients for the purposes of breast screening and symptomatic breast assessment.

Independently undertake specialist mammographic techniques, including magnification, spot compression and implant views.

Assist with interventional breast procedures, including stereo-guided biopsies, vacuum-assisted biopsies, wire localisation, ultrasound-guided procedures (where trained)

Ensure compliance with IR(ME)R, IRR, and local radiation protection policies, demonstrating accountability for patient and staff safety.

Work as part of the radiation protection team contributing to audit, quality assurance and assisting the Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) for the modality areas.

Ensure a patient-focused approach, addressing concerns with compassion and always maintaining dignity and confidentiality.

Monitor and optimize radiation doses in line with ALARP principles, demonstrating accountability for patient safety.

Occasionally manage complex cases, including oncology, paediatric, trauma, and vulnerable patients, with respect and sensitivity.

Contribute to optimising equipment performance, liaising with medical physics and engineers to maintain optimal functionality 24/7 service delivery.

Participate in an equal rotation of the 1st and 2nd X-ray teams on-call rota.

Potential working in the satellite X-ray unit at the Mignot Memorial Hospital, Alderney.

Leadership

Provide clinical supervision, mentorship, and training for Radiographers, assistant practitioners, and students, fostering a culture of respect and continuous improvement.

To participate in one-to-one and team meetings following HSCs Values Based Appraisal process, developing plans to meet personal and organisational objectives.

Assist in daily rostering, and performance management of the Radiography team, ensuring accountability in professional development.

To coordinate and delegate activities to colleagues where applicable within agreed systems of working, considering required skill mix and staffing levels, in accordance with patient/service user need.

Actively pursue CPD activities and promote evidence-based practice within the department.

Policy and Service Development

To support the lead Radiographers to initiate and implement improvements using a systematic approach using KPIs and clinical incidents.

Identify and implement service improvements, including new techniques and technologies, to deliver excellence in patient care.
