Job summary

The States of Guernsey are looking for a Dental Officer to join their team at the Children's Dental Service.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be part of a preventive focused dental team providing routine dental care to the pre-school and school age children eligible to receive care through the Childrens Dental Service( CDS).The appointee will be part of a multi disciplinary dental team which includes a Consultant Orthodontist, four other Dental Officers, two of whom have enhanced skills in Orthodontics, and Specialist Dental Nurses. They will also liaise with other health professionals who are involved in the overall health and well being of the patients seen by the CDS, these include a Maxillo-Facial surgeon, General Dental Practitioners, Medical Doctors including Anaesthetists, The Health Promotion Team, School Nurses, Health Visitors and Support Workers.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Clinical

Providing routine dental care, including preventive and restorative treatments andmonitoring of the developing dentition, for pre-school and school-age children eligibleto receive care through the service. This includes all high risk children and thoseattending Special Needs Schools. The dental care provided will be evidence-based andunder the direction of the Head of the Childrens Dental Service.

Providing emergency dental care for CDS patients as necessary, within normal workinghours.

Undertaking, following additional training if necessary, dental treatment undergeneral anaesthetic or sedation, in line with HSC and GDC Guidance.

Ensuring all clinical activities are undertaken in line with the prevention ofdecontamination and cross infection requirements of HSC and the GDC.

Prescribing treatments to be undertaken by Specialist Dental Nurses, DentalTherapists and/or Hygienists, employed in the department, in line with their specificqualifications and abilities.

Participating in the execution of dental screening programmes.

Liaising with other professionals and disciplines to ensure the dental care provided isin the best interests of the patient.

Participating in the Guernsey wide Emergency Dental On-Call Rota in line with theRegistration requirements of Guernsey.

Administrative

Recording all treatments, in line with the requirements of the GDC and HSC.

Assisting in the execution of dental preventive programmes both within and outsidethe department

Collecting and submitting accurate clinical and statistical records as required by theHead of Service and HSC

Communicating with other professionals and disciplines regarding patient careprovided by the CDS

Training and Education

Identifying to The Head of the Department any training needs required to fulfil role inthe department.

Participating in the induction programme arranged by HSC.

Developing and maintaining competence in any additional skills relating to the needsof the department.

Participating in Mandatory and Essential Training as required by The GDC, The Headof the Department and HSC.

Participating in peer review and appraisal process as required by The GDC, The Headof the Department and HSC.

Maintaining own continuing professional development needs as required by The GDC, the Head of the Department, and HSC.
