Job summary

The States of Guernsey are looking for a qualified school nurse to join their small but dynamic team based in Guernsey. You will be responsible, with the rest of the team for the delivery of Universal Health Services to the Bailiwick's school aged children. This will include universal screening as well as support around mental health and safeguarding. There is ample opportunity for clinical and safeguarding supervision and professional development, as well as opportunity to suggest developments for the team

Main duties of the job

The School Nurse (SN) will be part of the School Nursing Team based in Guernsey. The SN will be responsible for the delivery of Universal Health Services to designated area and/or schools. Reporting to the School Nursing Team Leader, they will support the development of the service and work with colleagues to ensure the delivery of a safe and effective Universal Health Provision.

Responsibility for Patient/Service User Care

1. To manage a caseload of designated schools or area as the named health professionalwith responsibility for the planning and delivery of the public health initiatives to thecaseload.

2. To be responsible for identifying need within a school or community. To use a child,young person public health approach to address health inequalities. Including thepromotion of good health and the prevention of ill health in the school and theimplantation and evaluation of individualised programmes of care.

3. To develop, implement and evaluate specialised programmes of care utilisingevidence and research. Including undertaking evidence-based child healthassessments and develop child health plans in partnership with children, youngpeople, parents and carers.

4. To be the principal point of contact for allocated schools in the area. To develop anddeliver cooperative working arrangements with schools that support healthyoutcomes for children, young people and facilitate partnership working across schoolsand other partner organisations.

5. To be responsible for the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme and immunisationsfor a designated area or school.

6. To carry out and support schools needs assessments in conjunction with HealthSchools for Healthy Outcomes.

7. To guide, advise and direct other staff in the assessment, planning, implementationand evaluation of specialised service user care.

8. To work with public health, local statutory, private and voluntary providers and usersto develop and promote practice that is accessible and responsive to all section of theschools community, ensuring that services are targeted to the most vulnerable groupsand individuals to support social inclusion.

9. To promote service user involvement in the planning, delivery and evaluation of care,respecting their beliefs and dignity.

10. To utilise data and information from a range of sources to identify service usercondition to guide decision making.

11. Within field of expertise and policy, request specific clinical tests to establish adiagnosis.

12. To work to the principals of a Non-Medical Prescriber, in line with the NursePrescribing Formulary and the Local Protocols for Nurse Prescribing, as appropriate.

13. To identify children in need and children in need of protection and work with otheragencies to support vulnerable families. To adhere to current Local SafeguardingBoard Procedures.

14. To participate in clinical and child protection supervision

15. To undertake the role of health promoter and educator for service users and theirsupport networks.

16. To facilitate training/advice sessions for colleagues, service users and their supportnetworks.

18. To report all accidents and incidents as per policy and participate in risk managementand Quality and Safety processes e.g SWARM.

1. To build a therapeutic relationship with service users and their support network,communicating with them in a way that respects their views, language, culturaldifferences and cognitive function.

2. To use a wide range of communication skills that can be adapted to meet the needsof complex and challenging situations.

3. To manage conflict between individuals including staff, service users and theirsupport network.

4. To establish effective working relations with all members of the multi-disciplinaryteam and outside agencies, clearly relaying condition related information in a timelyand effective manner.
