Job summary

The States of Guernsey are looking for a Psychologist to join the Reparative Care Team within Children and Family Community Services.The Reparative Care Team is a service based in Children and Family Community Services for the care of young people who are in residential, foster or adoptive care, and their carers and families.This team provides a professional and supportive service, following best practice guidelines, and using evidence-based approaches.

Main duties of the job

The work will include undertaking specialist complex psychological assessments and delivering psychological therapies to children (often with trauma and attachment related issues, challenging behaviours and mental health difficulties). There is a significant training and support role for carers and colleagues in other teams. There is also a lead clinical supervisory role in supporting the delivery of therapeutic interventions by social work colleagues. This will require providing regular clinical supervision to other professionals. The psychologist will offer specialist consultation and training to the rest of the service alongside other social work and therapeutic practitioner staff within the team.The post is in a large multi- disciplinary team, alongside a clinical psychologist. The psychologists provide the Reparative Care Team with a psychological resource within an equality and human rights framework.The psychologist contributes to senior management decision making and exercise delegated management responsibilities where appropriate. You would be expected to work autonomously within professional guidelines and exercise shared responsibility for the systematic governance of psychological practice within the service. To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research. To propose and implement policy changes within the area served by the team/service

Clinical

1. Individual therapy in complex cases.

3. To undertake a lead role in providing specialist psychological assessments of clientsreferred to the team based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integrationof complex data from a variety of sources including psychological andneuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirectstructured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family membersand others involved in the clients care.

4. To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and/ormanagement of a clients psychological problems, based upon an appropriateconceptual framework of the clients problems, and employing methods based uponevidence of efficacy.

5. To be responsible for implementing a range of psychological interventions forindividuals, carers, families and groups, within and across teams employed individuallyand in synthesis, adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upondifferent explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.

6. To evaluate, monitor progress and make highly skilled evaluations and decisions abouttreatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models andhighly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that haveshaped the individual, family or group.

7. To provide specialist psychological advice guidance and consultation to otherprofessionals contributing directly to clients formulation, diagnosis and treatmentplans.

8. To ensure that all members of the clinical team have access to a psychologically basedframework for understanding and care of clients of the service, through the provisionof advice and consultation and the dissemination of psychological research andtheory.

9. To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and toprovide both general and specialist advice to other professions on psychologicalaspects of risk assessment and risk management.

10. To act as lead professional, where appropriate, ensuring the provision of a carepackage appropriate for the clients needs, coordinating the work of others involvedwith care, taking responsibility for arranging reviews as required and communicatingeffectively with the client, the family and all others involved in the network of care,and to monitor progress during the course of multi-disciplinary interventions.

11. To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner, highly complex informationconcerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of clients under theircare where there may be conflicting views, high emotion and significant barriers tounderstanding and change, and to monitor and evaluate progress during the courseof both uni- and multi-disciplinary care.

12. To provide expertise, advice and support to facilitate the effective and appropriateprovision of psychological care by all members of the treatment team.

Training

1. To participate with other psychologists in the development, delivery and evaluationof specialist training across HSC in respect of relevant specialty related skills.

2. To participate in clinical supervision and appraisal.

3. To continue to develop expertise in the area of training and clinical supervision.

4. To seek the advice of the Lead Clinical Psychologist within the team regardingprofessional development needs/plans.

Service Development

1. To observe codes of practice of the British Psychological Society (BPS) which relate toprofessional practice, ethics, record keeping, team working and all other guidelinesrelevant to clinical psychologists.

2. To work within appropriate competences and experience and professional selfgovernance.

3. To receive regular clinical and professional supervision from appropriatelyexperienced Clinical Psychologists and if appropriate other senior colleagues anaccordance with BPS practice guidelines.

4. To ensure articulation of best practice in psychology by exercising skills of a reflexiveand reflective scientist practitioner, taking part in regular supervision and appraisal.

5. To ensure the development, maintenance and dissemination of the highestprofessional standards of practice through active upkeep of CPD training programmesas annually identified and as relevant to service provided.

6. To maintain active engagement with professional colleagues and developments in thegeneral field of Clinical Psychology through participation in service wide psychologyprograms where relevant.
