Job summary

The States of Guernsey are looking for a Specialist Safeguarding Practitioner to join the Adult Safeguarding Team in Community Health & Social Care.

Working within a multi-agency specialist safeguarding team, made up of staff with a range of core professional backgrounds, the post holder will undertake statutory functions related to adult safeguarding. This will include attending a weekly Multi-agency Safeguarding Referral Decision Hub, undertaking Duty to Inquire visits and undertaking formal safeguarding investigations.

Alongside this, the post holder will provide expert advice on safeguarding issues, policies, procedures, and practice within States of Guernsey Health and Social Care and beyond this to ensure safeguarding is seen as a priority within all aspects of working practice building on the framework of contextual safeguarding.

To ensure diversity within the role, the post holder will support with peer supervision and the delivering and facilitating of safeguarding training alongside other appropriate and applicable training to both colleagues and other professionals.

The post holder will be an experienced and highly skilled, specialist practitioner and must have recent safeguarding experience in working directly with adults at risk and their families within the arena of mental health, learning disability, older adults or community and/or acute health.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake the functions of Adult Safeguarding including, Duty to Inquire and SafeguardingInvestigations ensuring practice encompasses Making Safeguarding Personal.
  • Attend specific safeguarding meetings and any other meetings relevant to the role.
  • Undertake capacity assessments for individuals where there are concerns relating to theircapacity in respect to safeguarding.
  • Be aware of child safeguarding concerns and work collaboratively with Children Safeguardingcolleagues as necessary ensuring an understanding of Think Child and Think Family arecentral to working practice.
  • Work alongside other members of the Adult Safeguarding Team, supporting the AssociateDirector of Community Health and Social Care, to achieve the best practice in enablingemployees to fulfil their roles and statutory safeguarding responsibilities.
  • Utilise specialist knowledge and skills to provide guidance, support, safeguarding supervision,and training to HSC professionals.
  • Uphold the core values and practice of Making Safeguarding Personal.

Provide advice and support for employees who are involved in police investigations and court proceedings, including support with report writing.

Make full use of electronic communication, computers, and databases to support the safeguarding agenda.

Utilise highly developed communication skills to assist staff within HSC and multi-agency representatives/colleagues, to determine the relevance of health information to ensure robust decision making and appropriate response to safeguarding concerns.

Ensure all staff connect with their duty to protect children and young people alongside their role in protecting adults at risk.

Provide specialist safeguarding supervision and support to staff in managing sensitive and distressing situations, involving complex and emotive issues in relation to adult safeguarding.

Respond to any disclosure of a safeguarding concern, and signpost appropriately and be empathetic and provide reassurance to staff in dealing with sensitive, complex issues and concerns.

Support the role of Whistleblowing and Freedom to Speak up.

Empower staff in their identification and decision-making processes when confronted with possible adult abuse and neglect.

Liaise with practitioners to obtain relevant information, advising where necessary, challenging decisions when appropriate and implement agreed actions.

To challenge professional differences constructively with health professionals and our partner agencies. Have knowledge of and able to manage and escalate concerns.

Support and empower practitioners in communicating highly sensitive and complex information to colleagues, partner agencies, families and individuals.

Participate in any Serious Case Reviews as required, and the dissemination of any learning.

Support other members of the Adult Safeguarding Team with their daily duties when competing priorities arise within the Adult Safeguarding Team.
