Job summary

Adult Mental Health Services are seeking to appoint an approved social worker/approved mental health professional to complement the current ASW provision.

Main duties of the job

The duty and intervention team forms part of adult mental health services offering both urgent and non-urgent assessments to people presenting with severe mental health issues and/or acute risk. The composition of the team reflects an integrated multi-disciplinary model of mental health and social care.

Job responsibilities

Ensure that the requirements of the Mental Health (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law, 2010 are met and that patients rights under the law are upheld.

To make independent judgements relating to disposals under the Mental Health (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law, 2010 taking into account a wide range of external influences and factors.

To present at Mental Health (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law, 2010 tribunals and be prepared to account for decisions and judgements made whilst acting under Mental Health legislation.

To ensure the protection of persons and safety of service users property throughout and following application of the Mental Health (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law 2010.

To be cognisant with issues relating to people from a wide diversity of backgrounds and to ensure that these are taken into account at all times.

To communicate with a wide range of people and, in particular, to communicate and deliver messages which will potentially be received in a hostile manner, which will require sensitive management.

To undertake and manage the process of Mental Health Law assessments.

To manage the assessment and conveyance process dealing with potentially highly distressing, volatile, emotional, unpredictable situations.

To manage and take responsibility for a defined caseload and ensure full compliance with the Safeguarding of vulnerable adults, MASH protocol and all other policies at all times.

Maintain high standards of service user care, ensuring individuality and dignity is maintained at all times, while promoting recovery and independence.

Ensure that each service user in his / her care receives an individual assessment and is given a regularly updated care plan which, wherever practicable, is formulated in conjunction with the service user and approved by their supervisor.

Ensure that information regarding the service users needs and progress are communicated promptly and accurately to their relatives and to other workers involved in their care, having due regard for confidentiality.

Fully implement all agreed care plans and ensure that they are regularly reviewed and updated.

Use evidence based approaches to care for appropriate service users.

Ensure that information regarding service user needs and progress are communicated promptly and accurately to other team members involved in their care, having due regard for confidentiality.

Facilitate open and harmonious communications amongst staff within the team, as well as with other departments, with the aim of promoting multi-disciplinary approaches to care.

Share knowledge and skills in a wide range of areas, but particularly legal and practice issues as they relate to mental health legislation.

Assist with formal and informal education activities for users and carers.

Wherever appropriate, assist in health promotion initiatives.

Wherever appropriate promote Brief Solution Focused therapy as the model of intervention for Duty and Intervention Team.

GENERAL

Maintain an up to date knowledge of all HSC, Policy Council and Departmental policies and procedures and apply them as necessary.

Maintain up to date knowledge of Mental Health Legislation as it affects the role of ASW. Particular attention is drawn to the post-holders personal responsibility for the maintenance of patient confidentiality and adherence to local health and safety policies.

Liaise with and work within the wider Mental Health Services.

To supervise junior staff where applicable

Utilise all available resources efficiently and effectively.

Maintain up to date care and Mental Health Law records and keep those confidential and in a safe place.
