Job summary

The States of Guernsey is looking to recruit a Healthcare Assistant to join the team at St John's Residential Care Home.The role of the Healthcare Assistant is to provide care for the Residents under the guidance and supervision of the Operations & Home Manager and trained nursing staff; and to undertake other activities to assist in the running of the Home as required.

Main duties of the job

To provide care for the Residents under the guidance and supervision of the Operations & Home Manager and trained nursing staff; and to undertake other activities to assist in the running of the Home as required.

To be part of a care team, providing a flexible service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including bank holidays.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To act as a key worker for several residents.

To assist residents to settle in upon admission to the home.

To assist the residents in personal care including washing, bathing, dressing and toilet needs.

To participate in social activities with residents and to use all interactions as an opportunity for stimulation or occupation.

To ensure or assist residents in getting dressed each day.

To ensure that residents have any aids fitted, cleaned and in working order i.e. Dentures, Hearing Aids, Spectacles etc.

To assist the residents in rehabilitation activities under the guidance and supervision of the Operations & Home Manager and trained nursing staff.

To assist in the serving and clearing of meals, snacks and drinks, monitoring intake and reporting any concerns to the Nurse-In-Charge.

Complete all food and fluid charts and any other daily monitoring records as requested.

Ensuring dining areas are clean after use.

To respond promptly to call bells.

To recognise your own caring limitations and to seek guidance from the Home Manager

or trained nursing staff as appropriate.

To report to the Nurse-In-Charge, any changes in individual residents condition and any other relevant matter, noting especially any changes in skin condition.

To report any accidents or injuries immediately to the nurse in charge.

To respect the rights of residents including privacy and dignity and pay due respect to residents possessions.

To refer all enquiries regarding the care or condition of service users to the senior nursing staff irrespective of the source of enquiry.

To report to the Nurse-In-Charge any verbal concerns or complaints raised by the residents or visitors.

To be resourceful in the use of supplies.

Ensure your own personal safety as well as that of other members of staff, residents and the public by following health, safety and fire procedures.

To be aware and report any damage or repairs in the area, which may cause injury or present a risk to individuals in the area.

To follow appropriate moving and handling techniques in the work area whilst maintaining health, safety and security of others.

To abide by all States of Guernsey policies & procedures along with the Staff Handbook.

Comply with the principals contained in the Data Protection (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law 2001 concerning improper disclosure, misuse or breach of confidentiality in respect of information held on computer systems or otherwise.

Follow the department COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) policies and procedures.

To be familiar with the testing of the fire alarm and fire evacuation procedure and be able to implement the procedure when necessary.

Adhere to Infection Prevention and Control policies, procedures and best practice as specified.

To ensure the appropriate segregation and disposal of waste material

To complete all mandatory training required for the role.

To attend Staff and other meetings as requested.

To undertake any other duties as and when required.

To respect confidentiality of the residents and the home life at all time
