Job responsibilities

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES / ROLE

To individually assess and justify a range of diagnostic examinations under the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposures) Regulations (IR(ME)R) 2000 using appropriate Practitioner Guidelines.

To perform a range of diagnostic imaging examinations and provide care for patients during these examinations, respecting the rights of privacy and confidentiality, and to evaluate the clinical quality of the images produced.

To produce high quality images, including any digital image post processing required, on all examinations.

Updating records on CRIS and Centricity and ensuring PACS/CRIS processes are implemented in line with IR(ME)R, professional and local guidelines.

To offer clinical advice on images through A&E and GP fast tracks using the red dot indication system.

To maintain high standards of radiation protection being aware of the local rules and systems of work in each relevant area.

To ensure that all appropriate documentation of patient attendance is complete and accurate, including patient identity, pregnancy status and radiation doses.

To continue to develop through CPD and by role expansion as appropriate and to undertake all mandatory training as appropriate and in a timely manner. To record all training and development in a portfolio of continuing professional development.

To be involved in clinical audits, quality assurance and quality control programmes as required.

To assist in the instruction and supervision of newly qualified radiographers, student radiographers, assistant practitioners and other staff where appropriate.

To report any untoward incidents involving patients, staff or equipment to the Modality Lead Radiographer or directly to the Section Lead as soon as possible and in accordance with hospital policy.

Adhere to all HSC and Directorate Policies and procedures and Health and Safety and Risk Management.

Particular reference to IR(ME)R 2000, ensuring full compliance in own work, other staff members and within the work area assigned to.

Maintaining patient safety through rigorous and consistent compliance with hospital policies for the prevention and control of infection, including hand hygiene and maintaining a clean and tidy work environment. Undertake appropriate mandatory training and updates in infection prevention and control.

To be involved on the provision of the out-of-hours service within the Clinical Radiology Department.

Frequent short periods of moderate physical effort when positioning and manoeuvring patients, equipment and accessories.

Occasional/frequent exposure to distressing and emotional circumstances such as those relating to patients receiving bad news or involved with trauma.

Frequent periods of concentration in particular whilst carrying out clinical examinations.

Occasional/frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions (e.g. dealing with bodily fluids).

Prioritise work and re-allocate tasks, situations or staff to meet organisational requirements.

Discretion to work within a set of defined parameters and be guided by principles and broad occupational policies.

To undertake other duties as and when required by the demands of the service or the Modality Lead, subject to negotiation with the post holder.

OPERATIONAL / MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Work as a multi-disciplinary team member to ensure efficient and effective patient management.

Prioritise own workload to efficiently manage service provision.

Maintain effective communication and dissemination of information verbally and electronically.

Active involvement in service development, improvement and promotion.

To report clinical, non-clinical and radiation incidents in line with HSSD and departmental Risk Management policies.

To report without delay any equipment malfunction or image quality deterioration or failure to the superintendent radiographer.

Perform basic fault finding of equipment problems and liaise with service engineers to co ordinate repairs as required.

TRAINING, RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

To participate in the academic programme of the department as required.

To participate in annual appraisal reviews with a nominated appraiser.

Take responsibility for implementing a personal Professional Development plan.

Maintain knowledge of technological and technical advances in methods of diagnostic imaging in order to promote a culture of continuous improvement within the department.

Consult on, and draft procedures/protocols and also propose changes to own work area.

To perform regular self-assessment of images and reject analysis, ensuring all results are documented, recognising trends and work continuously to further develop imaging skills.

Maintain continued competency in emergency resuscitation, manual handling techniques, fire regulations and other mandatory courses particular to the work environment and to attend the appropriate training as required by HSC.

Qualifications

Essential

• DCR or BSc in Diagnostic Radiography
• HCPC Registration

Desirable

• SOR Membership
• Valid Driving Licence (for on call)

Experience

Essential

• Minimum 2 years relevant clinical and post graduate radiography experience in specialist area.
• Possess wide range of general radiographic skills.
• Demonstrable evidence of continued Audit and CPD.
• A knowledge of: Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Clinical Audit, Radiation Protection (including IR(ME)R 2000), Radiology based IT systems i.e. PACS and RIS.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work as part of a team.
• Good learning skills.
• Practical training in a wide range of general radiographic skills.
• Practical training in X-ray and Fluoroscopy.
• High standard of patient care.
• Ability to motivate and support others in clinical practice and training.
• Ability to prioritise.
• Ability to work calmly under pressure.
• Ability to use own initiative.

Desirable

• Evidence of working towards post graduate study within specialist clinical area.
